To put it in simple words, desktop GPUs will always be superior to their mobile counterparts. The RTX 4070 in this will be equivalent to a desktop RTX 4060 Ti or 4060. The desktop GPUs also have more VRAM than their mobile counterparts, for example 8GB in this vs 8-12GB in a desktop.

Have this, have had it for 2 months. Added another ssd drive and put in Samsung 990 evo plus. It was supposed to run hot. This laptop comes with a cover in the extra ssd slot with laptop heatsink, the new high performance drive runs cooler than the boot drive ssd according to tests. But the boot drive is a 30 size and the extra slot I put an 80 size in. Solid build returned a few before settling in this one. Do note power by usbc seems to be not available. I have a thunderbolt dock hooked up and the pass through is super low like 60w. It just gives me warnings about it on boot up and doesn't charge a bit. I've heard even the higher wattages won't power it. Have seen nothing in bios about it. The power brick is a big mother farker. Wish it charged thunderbolt. Solid build, I have a laptop stand fan under it for extra support, solid would buy again at this price right now

Who is the target audience for these Dell G15 and G16 laptops? Is it mainly gamers? But gamers who game at home or gamers who travel? Many people said these laptops are huge and like bricks and so is the charger. So taking it when traveling is not convenient right? So it's basically a desktop replacement? If that's the case, why not get a desktop instead? I assume it's because of the convenience of using It as a laptop when using it around the couch or in another room or occasionally traveling with it? Can't imagine someone bringing it to a coffee shop regularly for this?

The thing is the specs are very similar to the older XPS 15 laptops and current XPS 16 laptop right?. Thus processor is same as i7-H or i9-H and 32gb ram and 1tb ssd. The difference is these would have RTX 3060/3070 or 4060/4070 compared to XPS 15 which the 3050 or 4050 usually. The other similarity is the battery is both 86 Whr. However, people say the battery drains extremely fast on the Dell G15 and G16 laptop?

Can someone explain how this is the case if say the processor is similar to the XPS 15? Say with the XPS 15 9520 with i7-12700h processor and 32gb ram and 1tb ssd and RTX 3050 and 86 Whr. If both laptops are streaming the same YouTube video and playing it nonstop, the Dell G15 or G16 laptop battery will go out faster than the XPS 15? So web browsing would be still worst battery? If so why? Because when you are doing these things, you are using the Intel xe Graphics card with both laptops right and not the RTX so shouldn't battery be same? I know people say gaming laptops have horrible battery but the XPS isn't a gaming laptop though yet has similar specs?

I can't answer all your questions, but yea, probably gamers. I've carried around huge labtops and gigantic towers. Still prefer a laptop. If I happen to want to move to the couch to surf while I watch TV, I can. If I go to a LAN, unless I want to bring my show desktop, It's totally easier to bring a laptop. I've taken my old huge laptop overseas even, because then I could still game while I travelled. Or work. Sometimes my work takes some serious power to get through.

So yea...work and Engineers, I would say? I've brought a huge one to the coffee shop and school quite a bit. But that part it was kinda a pain, and I wished I had something smaller to work with.

Purchased G15 laptops for my two older children when they went to college. Light to Medium gaming (Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft), plus all the portability of a budget laptop at a nice price. Power bricks stay in their dorms (or apartments now) so that isn't a big deal. And if you are only taking notes or in class participation they can easily get 4-5 hours of battery life. Build quality is okay. Weight about as much as a textbook - nothing obscene. Screens have good picture quality. The OEM drives are cheap and have replaced them. One broke a screen which was a surprisingly inexpensive replacement. Replaced a battery after 3 years that was at about 65%. But chassis and other hardware is in good condition in years 5 and 3 respectively. No heating problems. Chassis are in good shape. Will buy another one for the youngest in about a year unless they make wholesale changes.

What's the return policy on these? Looks like a great deal, but had some bad luck with laptops in the past.

I have the prior gen version of this laptop (i7/3060), but all of your points still hold true. The laptop is an absolute tank, and the charger is a huge brick. It's definitely meant to be mainly for your workstation. I got tired of lugging it in my backpack to work.

Another point - battery life is extremely poor. Approx 1.5 -2h of casual light web browsing, and thats on minimum brightness, 60 Hz, and using iGPU. Maybe I got a defective one, who knows. Also, the fans randomly turn on even when not hot. When the laptop does get hot (and it does, often), it gets VERY hot.

The pros - definitely robust build and can handle almost any gaming you want. Screen is very good. If you are between the XPS 15 and the G16, I enjoyed my XPS 15 more, but if you need it primarily for gaming, this laptop is better.

A laptop does allow you to move it from a room to another which is good. But people who have a Dell G15 or G16 use it basically as a desktop replacement right? Like they do move it around and bring it outside but it's rare? Almost always, it's on the desk right?

Well when traveling with it, isn't it really bulky? Like even bulkier than those lenovo legions?

The thing is the battery is always poor no matter what right? Like you only YouTube a video and play it on repeat for hours? It won't go longer than 3 hours at the absolute most? I'm confused because if battery is same size as XPS 15, why would the battery run out faster than the XPS doing the same thing? These have the Intel Iris XE graphics card right that uses it when not using the RTX?

Why did you buy this laptop? Was it because you are using it mainly for gaming and use it when bringing it outside but just occasionally? Did you know it was going to be as heavy as it is along with the charger?

Did you know that battery was going to be this bad before getting it? How does it get 1.5 to 2 hours of casual browsing if it has a 86 Whr battery? A dell XPS 15 9520 assuming same condition as the Dell G15 with the same specs would last more than that since it has the same battery size? That is what has me confused since. When you say using IGPU, you mean the Intel Irix XE Graphics card similar to the xps 15 9520 or you mean something else?

I have a Dell XPS 15 9520 laptop and battery is getting bad as this laptop is few years old. I was just curious why people get the Dell G15 or G16 since all I hear about is it's very heavy and very bad battery. So the XPS 15 can't handle gaming compared to the G15 or G16? I don't do that type of gaming.

This or the Acer Nitro 16. The Acer has 16gb memory but is there anything build wise or screen wise that is better between one versus the other?

For me it's because I have my house and also Upnorth property. I can take this and use it plugged in at table or desk at my convenience. For home use I have it setup with external monitor and keyboards. Up north I use the laptop as is or use on my tv. Honestly seems odd to debate the portability and size in this thread….. you are looking at a large laptop and talking about why would you buy it. It's quite obvious it's large with the g16 title. Wouldn't you just look at the the 13" or 14". It's a gaming laptop not a MacBook, how small do you expect an engineered gaming laptop that is 16" expandable slots with dedicated gpu that needs cooling to get. Desktop would trump this for sure for price, but for what this is it's a good deal for people in the market for one. Most college kids love getting gaming laptops it gives them best of both worlds. They do make a smaller power brick as well. So I guess if you make anything it will be for someone. I saw an infomercial on a helmet you wear to grow hair. I'm not about to ask why anyone would buy it though.

Good price but the lack of USB-C charging is a bit of a letdown
