For those who only want cash, not points:

$1000 cash back less:
- $95 annual fee
- $50-100 opportunity cost for spending $5000 on a card that only gives 1%cb when you could have gotten 2-3%cb.

Still over $800 tax-free profit. Not bad at all.

Considering it. I have one more application before I hit chase 5/24, then wait for a boosted amex gold or platinum bonus.

Any 0% apr period on this?

Will they treat a tax payment at pay1040 as a cash advance? Most credit card vendors treat it as a purchase.
The offer is supposed to be available online starting 04/03.
Not only is it in OP's message, it's also in the subject. Good grief.

I'll be honest, I never got an option to pay by credit card. It only asked me for my bank account info. Maybe it's because I don't have an account and paid as a guest?

It's refunded if you cancel within 30 days of AF posting (I think it's technically like 41 or something) but it's always prorated for a downgrade-- but the internet seems to generally think it's prorated beyond that if you downgrade later-

But I've no personal data points on this (I will sometime in the next 4-6 weeks I suppose since I downgraded my CSR outside 30 days for this deal).

Possibly someone else who did this recently (but not as recently as I) has current info?
Well I have a very recent data point. I just looked at my former CSP account (downgraded on 4/7/25) and noticed this ...

Dec 01, 2024 ANNUAL FEE REFUND Fees & adjustments −$55.44 Smilie

It's now obvious that the rep that I talked to when downgrading my CSP did not know the prorating policy.

Quote from Knightshade :
Sure, but since there's no spend cap there's no benefit to having more than one of them.... unlike the Freedom and Freedom Flex where you gain another quarterly $1500 5x point cap for each one you have in the rotating categories.
Not disputing that; definitely agree that there's no advantage to having a 2nd CFU. I'm basically saying with the clarification, that if you already have a CFU, there's no real advantage to getting a CFF over a Freedom (unless you want a MasterCard). I personally have CSP, CFU, and two Freedom.

Not surprising on the rep thing, but thanks for the data point confirming they prorate refunds- it's both another reason to downgrade instead of cancel and reminds me to keep my eyes open next few weeks for my own partial AF refund.

Ah- you're missing out on one aspect of it.

When the 5x rotating category is restaurants- that STACKS with the regular restaurant bonus on CFF. So you get 7x that quarter using CFF, but would only get 3x using CFU or 5x using a regular CF for the same restaurants.

So that's a real advantage to a CFF over a regular Freedom.

As the IRS website link mentioned, paypal or CC payment is executed via 3rd party providers (which they link to on that page- there's more than one, but just go with whichever has the lowest fee, they're otherwise all basically the same)-- no need for any account, you just enter your personal and payment info with the third party and they execute the payment to the IRS on your behalf and email you a receipt.

Gotcha. I did not pay close attention to the details. I used the IRS link that my accountant sent me, and I assumed it was available right on the page. I'll remember this for next year if I want to go this route.

Thanks for mentioning the stacking, I didn't realize that.

Do you know if you can get a SUB on CFF if you have a Freedom card? CFF is not showing as an available card in my account. Years ago I got a SUB on CFU when having a Freedom card.

Far as I know SUBs for all first party (ie chase only, not some hotel or airline connection) are all independent from other chase cards with the single exception of the 48 months across all sapphire cards rule.

For 3rd party it can be weird/complex (especially with Marriott cards where they're also exclusions based on having or in the past having had certain Amex cards)

If I file a trip delay claim with CSP, and then downgrade before the claim is approved, will the claim be denied?

Here is my experience and process :

1. Had CS (6 Old) downgraded to Freedom flex through CSR - 04/17
2. Got referral link through reddit for SCR showing 100K bonus.
3. Applied through referral link today 04/24 - Got standard message that we get back to you in 2 weeks.
4. Call right away to application status line (800-432-3117. After keying SSN got standard message that we get back to you in 2 weeks. Pressed 0 to speak to agent.
5. Talk to agent . She found application and did basic verification and said need to process application. 5 min she processed and approved for 36K.
6. Transferred to customer service . Confirm bonus points and ask them to send me card with 2 day delivery.

If you are going to sign up for this card, which I highly recommend, reach out to someone who already has and get a referral code.

I've had both Chase Sapphire cards in the past, and each provide great value. The preferred has a reasonable annual fee, $50 hotel credit, plus other benefits easily cover the cost.

I am planning to apply on Monday, is there any way to use it before receiving a physical card? I want to use the card to pay taxes so I can finish my spending limit in one shot🙂
Quote from dealnabber :
Chase considers that to be churning abuse. They're fully aware then that (in their eyes) you were simply applying for the card just to get the bonus and then attempting to cancel it. To them, the odds are high that you will try to pull that again. They could flag your account(s), cancel it altogether (including any other Chase cards you have), and ban you from ever applying for another card, let alone any bonuses. Sounds like you got away with it with Capital One, but Chase and Amex are not as merciful.

As such, it is general consensus in the credit card bonus community to wait for that second annual fee to post before attempting a cancelation or downgrade.
Will the 2nd annual fee be refunded in this case?
