Seagate 24TB IronWolf Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD (CMR)

Comes to $16.66/tb. Not a bad deal. Same price at Adorama as well.

Edit: Seagate store now has matched price and I used 10% off welcome code to get it down to $360 which is $14.99 per TB.

Note that the 20TB has the same price as the 24TB so this is a no-brainer. The previous discount was $170 per drive (for the 24TB) and this one is $250 off.

Is it worth it to pull the trigger now or wait for BF ... Seems like these were around $280 (not pro version). Would appreciate any insights, thank you.

Is seagate dependable now or does the years ago stigma of dead or dying drive still hold true?

I am running 8 drives of same series of 18TB for two years. For me these are more reliable than WD red

I've used WD Red's in my ReadyNas for about 7 years with no failures or issues so there will be some outliers as how many HD's are manufactured annually.

They're still memed, but I've had no issues with reliability even during years when they were supposedly having high failure rates (Barracuda .12, for instance).

The problem has often been a bad feedback loop where something goes wrong, Seagate fixes it, customers drag their heels on applying firmware updates, and everyone develops thin skin.

However, the reality is no hard drive manufacturer is immune: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/ba...r-q1-2024/

Comparatively, Seagate often does better than Hitachi or Toshiba and trades blows with WD.

The reason issues seem more prevalent is in part because they just put out way more SKUs. It's about as fair of an assessment as saying a certain car brand has a higher fatality rate than any other brand, but excluding the fact that they also sold twice as many vehicles and thus have a greater sample size (not to be confused with Tesla, where all the fatalities are because they're POSes).
