I suggest anyone considering this look at the free options from Eskimo and Roamless instead. I think Eskimo's current offer is 500MB that expires after 2 years.

Yeah Eskimo is the cheapest one and we can share data with people if it's a paid data.
I also use keepgo it's slightly more expensive but the data never expires (new feature)

1gb esim is a hook to get your information, regular pricing is terrible and noncompetitive
airalo has much better pricing, for example

use ESIMDB.com to compare all the different eSim providers to find cheap eSIM for travel

We're going to Japan this summer, and I was considering Airalo. I was considering 10GB and just use the hotspot on my Samsung Galaxy to share with others in our group. Is there an quick and dirty way to disable push updates on iOS and Android devices? Maybe enabling data saver mode, but that may only work with Cellular, not Wifi, if they're connecting via hotspot.

My concern is more or less with the fact that devices will push a ton of data, email, app updates, background notifications, etc., and kill that 10GB data allotment pretty quickly over our planned 3 week trip. Thank you.

You'll be pretty surprised how much data we consume here in the states. Most of our data consumption is over WiFi. So when I travel to Asia, I usually allocate 500mb-1gig per person per day but YMMV. Of course this is using low data mode and manually turning off data usage on apps.

I've done 3 trips to Japan using eSIM for data. With data saver on and zero streaming, you will probably average 1.5 GB per week. That's doing normal travel stuff: google maps, translate, websites, news apps, etc.

Instead of hotspot, I recommend everyone your group get a cheap Ubigi eSIM. It's owned by NTT, which is the best network in Japan.

How do these eSiMs work? I have AT&T and let's say I want to avoid paying the $12/day global roaming charge when traveling abroad (say Japan), how do I make use of eSIM?

Just get off AT&T, we just switched to T-mobile and have free Unlimited Roaming pretty much Worldwide!

Once you're abroad, you turn your main SIM off and turn the travel eSIM on. That will ensure you won't get hit with roaming charges.

A free trial like this one is perfect for testing the setup in the US first.

eSim with data only is what's broadly available.
If you have dual esim compatible phone (iPhone 11+) then you can force the AT&T (e)sim to use the data only esim to do wifi calling. Your battery life will be terrible, but you can use AT&T sim normally.

Just went back from Japan. I suggest you download Trip app and get eSIM there, it's much cheaper than other platforms and some eSIM plans have Japan IP address which makes it easier to access local apps.
