The fins deteriorate. The roller isn't replaceable, you need to replace the entire head. The entire head is not cheap.

They'll say the fins prevent tangles but they used to sell vacuums with bristles that didn't tangle either. Guess it wasn't making them enough.

The best bet is to buy a used Dyson and change out the filters and head.
