Xm5's are notorious for their hinge issues. Open sonyheadphones subreddit and you'll see someone share their broken xm5's every 14 hours (they even keep a counter). Xm5's are a minimal upgrade from a sound quality perspective compared to xm4s. However, it's a significant upgrade when it comes to ANC. Still, don't buy these. Go for xm4s instead and save some money in the meantime. It also doesn't have the best hinge design or the best materials, but much more durable than xm5s.

Agreed. I've had my xm4's for a few years and love em. Did some research online to see if it was worth upgrading to the xm5's and saw a lot of complaints so I decided to stick with what I had.

The xm6's are heavily rumored to be coming out very soon so it might be worth waiting to see what those are like.

Agree with the other comments. The XM5s have slightly better default tuning (if you use the EQ, that difference isn't that important. Neither has great default tuning), has a bit better noise canceling.

The XM4s are still close in those previous mentions and also folds up, which is better for travel. That hasn't been mentioned and is the main advantage of the XM4s besides usual price. I don't know about the durability issues mentioned. Many people don't take care of their things so it is hard to tell if there is a problem.
But rumors of xm6s, suggests that it is coming soon, maybe this summer. Whether this matters depends on if you are looking for something lacking in current models.

personally I have xm3 and xm5 so can only compare those but xm3 has better battery life by quite a bit so I like it there, and it seems more sturdy compared to the suspicious xm5 hinge so. I would assume xm4 is better.

Get the refreshed deal via amazon/ebay listed in the past on SD. It comes basically brand new. Was $179 w 2yr warranty. Warranty will not repair hinge break be gentle with these.

The hinge community is unhinged. My xm5s have been through years of hell business travel, daily use, dropped etc no issue whatsoever.

I get the impression people who don't even own xm5s go around parroting the hinge complaint. Probably most of it is due to careless handling then people spend the rest of their lives whining about it. 🤣

I have been using my xm5s daily for many years and they have held up great! I love them and would definitely buy another pair if they broke. EDIT: My wife also owns a pair and they have never had any issues either.
