PSA: Looks like total wireless changed the policy from 60 days after activation to 60 days of active service. This went in to effect April 1st 2025.

Good phone and good deal.

The a35 is good, and is likely the last of the "good" Samsung a-series phones with an SD slot. The a36 and a56 don't have them.

I got the previous (nearly identical) a54 deal and was very happy with it. The two phones are architecturally almost identical (same processors and ram). It's not a speed demon, but is fast enough to do all "normal" stuff, like social media, email, phone, etc... without any real performance problems. Maybe a gamer would be disappointed with it, and it will be getting OneUI 7 very, very soon.

Wow.

Porting in a number is a hassle -- if you don't already have a phone number.

The whole ID verification is just...how do the kids say it nowadays...."totes wack".

No idea how they're storing your image and credentials -- or who has access to them -- or what the process is for them to expunge that data -- or who is ensuring they're following best practices.

Oh who am I kidding, your DL and image are being sold to the highest bidder. We all know that.

But the policy doesn't say 60 days have to be continuous. Maybe another 30 days would work. The worst scenario is $20 for another 60 days. But for rebranding, do we have to buy a new sim or just the one that had been used by total wireless?
Can this TW phone be used for TracFone without unlocking(after 30 days with TW)? I assume you are talking about port the number from TW to TF after 30 days, then stay with TF for another 60 days, is that right?
Also, which plan do you plan to use only $20 for 60 days(I couldn't find it, is that the $10/month promotion with auto pay)?
Thanks!

The worst scenario is if you botch the activation/unlock and then it never unlocks even with a second attempt at 60 days of service on Total, TracFone, or any Verizon service. Not fun to have a permanently locked phone.

phone from total could be used in Tracfine after rebranding. $10 per month with autopay, or 19.99 for 90 days. not sure about porting, I think activating a new line should work. Might need a new sim.

Total, TracFone, straight talk all belong to Verizon. Rebranding is a trick which has been used many times in previous deals.

That is exactly what my point to the customer service representative, but no luck. My phone was activated sometime in February 2025. Total/ Verizon is enforcing this updated policy retroactively. I ended submitting a complaint to FCC.
I might be in the same boat as you. My phone(Edge 2024) was activated on February 7 (which makes today, April 8, the 60-day mark). It still says "Locked" on the phone. BUT when I enter my phone's serial number(IMEI) on www.tfwunlockpolicy.com, it says:

"Validation for Phone with Service Line
Our systems indicate that your device has a service line attached. For security reasons, we also need to verify your phone number."

After entering the phone number, I see:

"Device Unlocking Eligibility Result
Eligible For: Unlocking

Based on our Unlocking Policy, your device meets the criteria for unlocking. Please read the information below carefully before proceeding with the Unlocking Request."

The page asks me to enter my name, email, and an alternate phone number. But when I click the "Submit" button, it just loops me back to the page where I entered the serial number—without any indication that my request was submitted successfully...

I was curious what you see on their webpage when you enter your serial number.

Interestingly, if I use my phone number on the initial page instead of the serial number, it says:
"We apologize. Your device is not eligible for our Unlocking Program."

I bought the A35 for the Gaming coupons. Samsung discontinued the coupons. Now I have a shitty phone I just use for streaming. The phone is sluggish like really bad. I can't believe they make phones this bad. I'm coming from an iPhone 15 PM.

phones that auto unlock don't work with the old unlock page, it shouldn't be necessary for 2024 phones.

So I guess I'm out of luck unless I buy another month of service, since it still hasn't unlocked on the 60th day...

Sometimes it's 60, sometimes 61. Reboot. Try different sim etc. Seems like some phones just need a kickstart.

I'll wait a couple more days, but so far, rebooting and trying a different SIM haven't worked.

Does anyone know if buying a $30 refill for the 15GB Data Plan (the cheapest option?) would satisfy the new "60 days of paid active service" policy, instead of having to buy one of their phone plans for $40 or $55?

Both my phones Samsung A35 and Moto Edge purchase on Feb 6 and Feb 7 have NOT unlocked.

Called customer service and they say 60 days of paid service needed. Seems like they are applying this policy to all phones whose 60 days happen after April 1.

Pretty sure you need a plan that includes days of service time.

Better hurry. The FCC might not be around much longer.
