Is anyone else annoyed at the serious price gouging on the $2 pampers Q on e*bay? Shame on the clipping sites for charging $0.50 handling, limit 5. Long expiration, so I am trying to stock up on the cheap but that's not going to happen. It's almost cheaper to buy the $0.75 wipes MQ!

I have been watching the Pampers wipes coupons since they first started showing up on eBay and cannot believe how much the prices have skyrocketed
After my fiasco at Kmart when I was accused and detained for DS "stealing" part of a toy (long story - check the K thread if interested, but seriously not worth the time to read). All was resolved w/out issue 3 weeks later and lots of wasted phone calls, time, etc. i decided to investigate this idea of theft and what actually constitutes theft further. Found out some interesting info. Horatiohoney is a wealth of ideas and info., FYI.
1) They cannot detain you - only police (real police, not rent a cops!) have the authority to arrest and detain you. You can always walk out if police are not involved as they are breaking the law if the try and forcibly restrain you or keep you against your will.
2) If the value is less than $250 (don't quote me on that, it could be less - not wanting to look up the actual amount right now) it is punishable by a fine and a citation. No arrest.
3) Proving shoplifting, unless you are stopped with the merchandise on your person, outside the doors of the store is a tricky thing. If they watched you shoplift on video then police should have been called to be waiting while you leave and apprehend you. Short of this, its a very "gray" area and open to all sorts of abuse.
Now a peelie, hangtag, etc. have no real value (something like .001 cent) BUT they are attached to a product with the idea that the person purchasing the product will use it. This, however is not stated on the coupon so one could argue that they are in public (not shrink wrapped or otherwise enclosed in the package) and therefore no different from a tearpad. Taking an entire tearpad is bad manners but not illegal.
I think this store has probably had issues with people clearing the shelves of newly placed coupons and is frustrated. They could ask for the coupons back, but you can always say no. Esp. if you only took 1 or 2. You can also say you wanted to get some other Q from home and planned on returning to use what you took. You were afraid none would be left so you took it now, to use later.
I think they counted on the embarrassment it would cause you to be called out for coupon pilfering. That was the aim - to harass and embarrass you - no real intention of prosecuting. If it ever happens again, call their bluff. I'd love to see the reaction when you tell then to call the police to report shoplifting of 2 coupon peelies.
