LOL that's not really correct... Premium stuff can have up to 50% more additives and a better, cleaner VM. Yes there are mainly 4 large additive companies (many more medium and smaller) but let's take the biggest of those 4, Lubrizol. They sell many different additive packages so just because many blenders buy from them doesn't mean they buy the same package.

The stuff sold at a price point (bargain basement) will meet API SP and dexos1 will have a treat rate of about 8.5% wt in the engine oil. Treat rate is the focus for products sold under a bid as the additive is sold by the ton, the less you use the cheaper the product. The more premium stuff will meet ACEA, MB 229, VW 501, etc. and have a treat rate of closer to 13%.

Now the clincher for me is that cheap additive package will pair with a cheap viscosity modifier (VM), the stuff that makes it a 0W-xx, usually some olefin copolymer (OCP). These are what I refer to as dirty polymers because they tend to leave more deposits as they break down (piston walls, skirts, rings, turbo bearings).

Those premium packages because they need to pass more stringent Euro specs will use a styrenic type polymer usually a star polymer which is a cleaner and more shear stable VM. This helps us keep the pistons cleaner = less scuffing, blow by, better power, better fuel economy, and these days more importantly a cleaner turbo as those are very hard on oil.

In the end the cheap stuff will not kill your engine, but much like living on ramen noodles and McDonalds it isn't going to make that engine stay at like new performance. I used to formulate this stuff before I retired so happy to answer questions.

You can use 0w-20 just fine. Heck same motor outside the US calls for up to 5w-30

Lower viscosity in the US is for CAFE reasons, not motor longevity.

Not much more, and it's $20 less than having 4 jugs in my garage taking up space.

Ok.. well go get the engine number and Google it.

Thos is car oil. Small engine oil is typically different. You bought a honda engine, put the right oil in it.

and if you're a new homeowner.. my suggestion is to keep those books. you'll refer to them over time

Also there is this app called Google where you can find online versions of manuals

Bought 4 cases last sale and still have one due to one of our vehicles totaled. New replacement takes 0w-16, wish Costco sold it.

Ow-16?
What car?
It's all about those mpgs now I guess

As long as its sealed then yea no problem. If its open just put in a plastic bag to keep moisture out.
Oil is not hygroscopic like brake fluid. As long as the cap is on tight it's not picking up moisture. And even if it did somehow pickup a few drops of water, the first time you drive the car it will be gone.

VOA tests at BITOG reveal that stored oil doesn't really have a shelf life.

Mobil at one point claimed 7 years, but that was a number to cover themselves, and testing shows it's much longer. The problem is the oil goes out of spec for new cars at some point, rather than actually going "bad".

What I would suggest for long term storage is that you shake the bottle right before you pour it in. It's possible that additive settling can occur.

Must ....resist....temptation to buy more oil. But this is a great price without any rebate hassles. Only thing better are the random true Slickdeals like AutoZone clearance sales for $1 per quart or Walmart price mistakes where you end up getting 2 jugs for free haha

Yeah I always laugh at these questions....oil was in the ground for millions of years so it's not going to "spoil" in 5 years

Pro tip: every known brand manual is found online in PDF format. So you can toss those paper book manuals.

This is good advice until your hands are covered in filth, you have poor coverage and you just want to know the answer quickly. My garage is a cell and wifi black hole.

Find the manuals and print them out.

Or level up - find all the important details and type yourself up a cheat sheet. Have multiple copies laminated and put them all over your shop.

I have all the part numbers for replacement blades, replacement wheels, replacement carburetors, spark plugs, air filters, oil filters, oil type and what sockets/tools are needed.

I had it on my phone, in a "OneNote" but I'd rather print another cheat sheet than replace another phone, or deal with having to walk outside the garage every time to load it up.

Who does this costco oil? rebranded from where? I normally use the Penzoil 5w-20 Ultra full synthetic for Ram Truck
Project Farm did a YouTube video testing Costco oil and found it performed well.

Does the oil need to be purchased online for this deal? Or can I walk in to my club and find the same deal?

Both my wife's 2024 Camry and daughter's 2023 Rav 4 takes 0W-16. My 2021 Tacoma takes the 0w-20. Had a case of 5W-20 from another Kirkland oil sale my old 2007 Taco used I'm switching in between changes on my new Taco.

Oil is not going to "spoil" but additives in motor oil can lose their effectivness over time. It could be the reason "ExxonMobil recommends a five-year maximum shelf life for engine oils, including Mobil 1™ synthetic motor oil." or "Pennzoil recommends a shelf life of up to 4 years for their motor oils when stored properly." I am not an motor oil expert and I am not going to queston their recommendations. One thing for sure I would not use 20 year old motor oil in any of my cars.

Ordered (2). Have 3 Hondas that use 0W-20. 2 of them suffer from oil dilution so I need to make sure I change the oil every 6 months or 5000 miles (whichever comes first).
