Do these need to be connected to a device or can they just run stand alone. My kids want a watch with step tracker. We tried a check one and it sucks. Wondering if this can be used by them instead?

You do realize they don't really count steps, they count arm swings.

This is not entirely true. I can swing my arm while sitting and the step count does not increase. I can walk with my hand holding my backpack strap or in my pocket and the step count keeps moving up. The accelerometer logs the jolt of the step, not the swing of the arm.

This is a great basic smart watch, even better as a fitness watch. Been using for a year. Battery last about a week and a half. Very comfortable. Sometimes you can find overstocks on ebay for around $25. Can be used without a phone but then you do not take advantage of its full capabilities. Does not work with iPhones, just Android.
