You get what you pay for.
You can buy this phone for more without the requirements.
If they did not require this some folks would buy dozens to resell (which I have no exact issue with other than it make such a deal impossible to offer)
Decide for yourself.
It's really no different from walking into T-mobile and signing a contract to get a 'free' or subsidized iphone. They take your id there.

Anyway, was able to claim chase rewards offer $15. Not bad. Though I want to do port out/ in process as soon as possible, as the previous line which I just resumed service will burn $1 per day

If you want to unlock it's not a good idea to mess with the sim - especially now that they changed the unlock policy.
(1) I used my GV number when ordering -- used my mailing address (same address associated with my google voice account).
(2) When I got my phone, used same GV phone number. Used my 4 digit voice mail pw as pin and "000000" as the account number. [EDIT] don't do this!
(3) I got a notification by email from google that I needed to pay the $3 to "unlock" to port out -- so I did that, and then that was it; within in minutes my GV number worked for making outbound calls and texts. A couple days later I got another email from google stating the number had been ported out, and I checked my device and confirmed it could start to receive incoming calls to the phone..

Correct; use "other" for carrier selection since Google Voice isn't listed.
Please let us on this thread know how that works out for you.
3 minutes after my text from Google Voice about them receiving my attention to Port, I got another email from Google Voice saying they stopped the port because some information Needed to be updated. It was after hours so I submitted a email reply asking what the problem was. The next morning they replied:
Upon checking the status of your Voice account, it was found that your Voice number ending in 0004 was unlocked on 17-Apr-2025 22:34:07 PDT.
Please note that your 10-digit Voice number also serves as the account number and the voicemail pin serves as the porting pin. However, there's no voicemail pin created that also serves as the porting pin.
Failure to provide the correct account number and pin may cause port delays with your receiving carrier. To set up the pin, kindly follow the outlined steps below.
Go to voice.google.com.
In the top right, click Settings and then Account.
Scroll to "Voicemail," and turn on Call to listen.
Set a PIN.
Click Save.
I know this information is wrong though that I did create a pin because I tested it checking my voicemails from a different phone. They do suggest you use your account number instead of 000000 though it looks like. In any case I'm able to make calls and texts on my new Total wireless device even though the accounts don't list as active on total Wireless so maybe I'll just wait a couple days before doing anything
