If they did not require this some folks would buy dozens to resell (which I have no exact issue with other than it make such a deal impossible to offer)
Decide for yourself.
It's really no different from walking into T-mobile and signing a contract to get a 'free' or subsidized iphone. They take your id there.

I didn't have a psim for visible and US mobile warp.
I read that phones from Verizon and Verizon owned MVNOs work out of the box if the psims are Verizon or Verizon owned MVNOs. It's not as restrictive compared to others.
I just got my 2nd iPhone 13 this week. Ordered a Psim from Verizon and will test it out if this still holds true.
