I live in the east coast far away from a major airport hub. In summer 2024 I booked a roundtrip economy award flight to Japan from Charlotte NC for 55000 transferred amex points
My ticket price went from $1800 to $600.
175,000 x $0.006 = $1,050
Less:
- $695 annual fee
- Apx $112 opportunity cost for spending $8000 on a card, getting 0.6%cb when you would have gotten about 2%cb.
That's $243, similar to most sign up bonuses.
Plus, the cash back is a statement credit, not cash, so you may have to spend a little more on the card to spend down the credit.
I'm waiting for a boosted sign up bonus on the AMEX Schwab Platinum card. It gives 1.1¢ cash back per point, deposited directly into your Schwab account.
Yes you can still do it but takes a lot more legwork then it used to and what once was 100k business class tickets are becoming more 150/200k business class tickets plus fuel surcharges etc.
I used to use it for a lot of domestic AA tickets via BA but that rug got pulled too. Even if I did availability of award seats is almost non existent.

But sitll tempted. On a Rolex waitlist ($9k retail) and was told I would get it sometime this year so this might come in handy. Buy the rolex, get the $1k points and then pay off card in full in next billing statement and then close the account.......
They've devalued the points a lot over the years, and we've taken to using the Marriott more. Marriott has devalued their points, too, I'm not sure at this point which is better, but it's worked out that the places we've gone we've found more Marriott stays at lower points. BUT it comes in handy to have the Hilton, too, for when you're looking for a place to stop on the road and want options for who has the cheapest points night nearby. Though we still use it on our may stay as well.
I'm planning on using this to get the 150k bonus points and then close the card immediately after..I figure in the next 6 months or so. Would I then waive the annual fee? If not for the annual fee, getting $1k back in points is excellent for a $8k purchase.
PS: Those only seeing 80k, get a vpn browser like Opera, use vpn and you'll see the 150k offer. It seems amex is targeting specific locations for higher points. I'm in CA btw.
