It's a monster chipset that's extremely powerful/efficient and will last you for years. This build is great, with ample RAM (more than the average user will ever need) and a 1TB hard drive. If you need a solid Apple computer, I would jump on it. With the idiotic tariff pissing match going on, you're not going to see many of these deals on Apple products as the year goes on, especially ones with the M4 chipset, as production is really going to slow down. Tariffs exceeding the value of the actual goods are bad business for both the manufacturer and the consumer. Dumb times we're in...

you might want to check this out, if you dont want to check the whole video you can just skip to the parts with charts comparing performance

How big of a step up the M4pro would be mostly for future proofing? I tend to use laptops for many years. I still rock 2016 MBP. I used to have M1 pro and it was faster than I needed it to be.

With the M4 / M4 Pro, Apple's offerings seem to have matured rather well - and they are shockingly efficient, with miles of performance headroom for the average person.
My newer M4 mac mini ($450!) actually beats out my older 14" 64GB M1 Max MBP (which is already a very impressive machine) in both single & multi-threaded CPU performance - Cinebench r23 single thread: 2267 vs 1489.
In terms of real-world use, the M4 mini has only consumed ~2.25W average over the course of 290 hours since I've had it running on a Kill-a-watt - that's just ~650Wh of power consumed over the course of almost 2 weeks - and this is with it driving 2 large (at or near 4K) displays. My Windows desktop PC consumes more power over just ~6 hours of similar use.

I'm all for deals, but after having experienced how badass the little M4 Mini is, I can't lie - I'm a little tempted to upgrade the old M1 Max with an M4 Pro.

Damn Best Buy doesn't have these in stock. Would've loved to price match them.

There's a 2TB version of this one for $50 more if you don't mind certified refurbished. It was actually $1700 initially too but MC recently bumped it up $50.

Hmm, I'm unsure whether to go for this or the M4 Pro/24GB available at Best Buy for $1850 (but you get essentially $50 off by signing up for their pro membership or whatever). I am learning video editing right now, and initially got the M4/16GB Macbook Pro on sale at Costco but man, this thing gives me out of memory errors left and right just from having a few Firefox windows open. I also do coding so I'll have an IDE. Should I go for the M4 Pro or the M3 Pro with more RAM?

I'm a developer too that frequently does photo editing and once-in-a-bluemoon video editing and I chose this spec. This has more video cores so will do better on that department, more 1 more CPU core but is slower in benchmarks. Both have 1 media engine so if you're editing 4k, you'll be limited just the same on export times like what Cole encountered here (or he may have been bottlenecked by his SSD speeds) https://youtu.be/slJhwMuuENE?si=i...4sss&t=311 for an M2 pro vs M3 pro. Still, 5 and a half minutes of render time for 4k is no easy feat and is pretty impressive. If you can no longer edit with the machine, you still have a long life to develop with this machine.
And to be honest, I really love being able to sit down in coffee shops for hours while listening to music and developing my side projects without being plugged in.
