I haven't used one of these in years. Used one on an old Camry where the rubber was disintegrating and it was getting uncomfortable to hold. Newer cars don't seem to have this problems.

What reasons are there for using this? Protection from sun?
Bare steering wheel gets too cold. I have it on the wheel so it doesnt feel too cold and warms up faster than a bare steering wheel.

Picked one up, our 2012 Honda steering wheel is starting to "peel" according to Amazon this should fit the steering wheel nice & snug.

UPDATE: this is JUNK. I am returning it.

Probably not good with Tesla. They need D shape covers
Look at the pics. This is also for D-Shaped wheels.

Why do you say that, exactly? In what way(s)?

They are probably of the belief that the friction between your hands and the wheel is much stronger than the friction you create using a wheel cover. This obviously depends on the cover's material and design. I would agree that they can be very unsafe but only if you have to squeeze or grab it harder than your cover-less wheel. I've heard of strange situations caused by large keychains, so i guess there's also a tiny possibility someone with a big keychain gets it snagged on the cover fabric, lol. Stay safe out there.

They are not very dangerous as a class of accessories for your wheel. They can add to your safety as a matter of fact, if you get a proper type and fit for your personal needs.

There are of course some situations, that could make one unsafe for your vehicle and for your driving needs.
Too large an outer diameter and they rub your legs as you try to turn. You may have to tilt the wheel higher than you feel is safe to use it.
Too sticky on your hands and your hands catch and get stuck when coming out of a turn when you wanted the wheel to slip through your fingers to self-correct.
Too slippery on your hands.
Too loose a fit on the wheel and they can slip.

BUT common sense avoids ALL of these potential dangers. They list the correct wheel size range they are made for.
If you get one with a grip type not good for your needs, you will know within a few minutes.

My hands are dry, so I like ones with some grippy sections. I also like the cloth material ones for their temperature tolerance and comfort. I like leather ones when I have a non-leather steering wheel. I've tried many. I hated a couple and removed them immediately after trying them out. Others I've loved and kept on for years. Some cars I have really needed one for, and some I have never wanted or needed anything other than the stock wheel covering.

It is unfair to generalize the whole product class as very unsafe. It is a preposterous claim. But they are not here to explain this claim with any reason, so I presume it is some incorrect fit issue, or some material that made their use unsafe for their use case that has jaded them.

Just read the 1st two reviews on Amazon. The cover does not stay in place, & needs readjustment after every turn. Decided not to order.

I've used these on a tri-axle dump truck hauling 80,000 lbs, never had any issue. Not even from the super cheap ones. Only way it would be unsafe is if some nimrod puts one on his Cheech and Chong 13" steering wheel.

Mostly to keep the steering wheel in new condition for resale. Steering wheel is the most hands on part of the car over a lifetime.
Keeps the heat down if you have an issue with that also. Makes the wheel thicker if you prefer that too, I appreciate a thicker wheel.

I used to use a velvet feeling cover that felt like it had a super thin layer of memory foam. OMG I loved it, never burnt my hands and never froze them.
