Its free shipping but they saddle you with $37 in "shipping insurahce" ? Am i correct that this is basically a hidden shipping cost? I cant keep the bike in the cart after removing the insurance item.

This is, by far, the best $120 bike I've ever seen on Slickdeals. But it's like having the best food poisoning ever. You probably still don't want it.

It's not that it's terrible exactly. It's that there's almost no scenario where you won't soon regret the purchase. The parts are complex like quality parts, and come with a maintenance burden to match, which is beyond what almost anyone that buys a bike at this price point is willing to endure.

Maintaining it isn't exactly hard, but requires time, knowledge, and a few specialized tools and bikes that aren't ridden regularly require nearly as much work as bikes ridden constantly. So you end up with two scenarios:

- You don't want an expensive bike because you don't ride much. So the ratio of maintenance time to ride time ends up being tilted to unpleasant maintenance work,
- You ride a lot, so the maintenance isn't as large of a percentage of your time. But if you ride a lot you likely value higher quality, and you're not shopping this anyway.

Most folks looking for a bike to pedal around the neighborhood, or lock up on campus, are better served by something less complex like an old friction shifted mountain bike or even a simple beach cruiser.

If you can't give an alternative then why even comment. Not everyone has a bunch of money laying around and not everyone needs to go for Tour de France!!!

While your sentiment is right, it makes no sense when you consider the price of buying this new (even with basement level components) vs all else.

Economics is a wonderful thing when there is a product and price for many entry points to consumers. Not everyone is going to go shopping for Ultregra parts just because.
I never said go buy Ultegra; I said buy used or at least the minimum of named components bc I have prior experience with Giordano putting atrocious components on their stuff. I've personally bought an older used carbon Ridley with Ultegra 6600 for 300 but you'd tell me to buy this bottom-scraping frame and components new instead?

Is $300 the same as $120? Of course for more money, getting lucky in the used market, time patience and knowledge almost always yields a better result; but that's a whole lot of assumptions - no? not only that but not everyone buys a bike to mod it or has the same purpose for it.

That's like me telling you to buy a 1985 porsche 944 for $30k when you're looking at a $15k 2020 honda civic because you need to take your kids to school. Makes absolutely zero sense without context.

Except I don't think the sentiment is right. Most of the bikes in this range (including the ones from Walmart) use parts that are interchangeable with parts that are easily accessible and upgradeable. You don't have to buy the exact same model for the replacement, it just has to be the same gear range and pull ratio if discussing the derailleur/shifters. These types of bikes are actually quite popular with people that like to mod and upgrade - Because parts are easy to get. There are multiple YouTube channels that focus on "department store" bikes for reviews and upgrades.
So which is it - are these for mod enthusiasts who know what they're getting (and are mainly upgrading them for views) or the average SlickDealer who has probably not ridden a bike since middle school and wouldn't know a derailleur from the stem? If it's the latter then they'd be better off with a well-kept older bike off Craigslist that might run just a little more expensive but that they don't have to put together from the box

Lol where did these kids come from and why are they being taken to school on a Giordano? Your example makes zero sense because this is clearly an extraneous purchase for 99.9% of people looking on SlickDeals so if they're already deal hunting and aren't in horribly dire need of a bike for their livelihoods or whatever assumed "context" you cooked up in your head, why not lead them in a better direction?

Simply saying you don't have a rebuttal or justification is an easier way to respond.

You do you man, clearly you don't want to hear other case scenarios and honestly that's fine by me.

Brother my entire response was to your severely edge use case - you're just choosing not to read or feel offended that i rightfully pointed out that it isn't very applicable, especially looking at the comments by other users who are decidedly *not* needing to buy this bike to take their kids to school or do their job. But here - yes, if you absolutely must buy a bike to tide you over for your next paycheck or tug your kids to school this week, this will do the job for a bit. If you're actually looking for a proper deal and an enjoyable, low-maintenance ride, then I would recommend people look elsewhere because a little extra spend will go a long way.

Thanks! I was able to grab the very last one supposedly.
They add $40 of "optional" shipping insurance and push you directly to checkout, with no way to edit the order unless you click back out to cart. The insurance also isn't even listed as a normal item but hides on the bottom right as a weird toggle, super annoying.

As soon as that item is removed the bike also disappears from the cart. I tried it 2x back when it was in stock. Ah well, its out of stock now anyway, probably would have bought one if i didnt stop for that annoying fee, but then again i dont actually need a new bike right now so maybe im better off lol.

Perhaps you did not read the comment before mine. The fact that mod enthusiasts like the bikes shows that the bikes are upgradable with standard parts. It was in response to a comment that said you will not be able to find parts for the bikes, which is a flatly wrong comment. But your assumption that people who cannot maintain a bike will be comfortable looking at used bikes on Craigslist to determine if they are in good condition is a bit fanciful. That is why they end up at Walmart to buy a bike. And it's probably fine for the average slick dealer that will ride it a few times and then store it in the garage until they sell it on Marketplace to reclaim the space.
