7600 is outdated at this point. It has 6 cores and is weaker than even a 12700k with 12 cores. If you are on AM5 platform, the 9600X is more efficient with not much more money. 9700K is obviously better if you can afford it. But to get better performance than the 245K in gaming, you really need to spend more for the 7800X3D or 9800X3D.

Gamers nexus disagrees. https://youtu.be/WxXZlONu4Ig
I would question the value of this, especially not knowing what Intel plans to do with the socket. I would invest in AM5. 24/32 core AM5 is coming and Intel has been a mess the last few gens.

I would also prefer AM5 due to the X3D chips, but they are in a different price range. And let's not pretend that the 6-core 9600X is impressive either.

there is no 9700K, unless from Intel lol

I would get the Intel and not bother with motherboard upgrades
Or get an 8 core Ryzen and do the same

Zen 6 will use 12-core chiplets to bring 24 cores to AM5 (maybe technically 26 when counting two extra "LP cores" in the I/O die). That core count is irrelevant to gaming and most users, and 12-core X3D will become the new hit chip, hopefully with something cheaper below it like a 10-core X3D.

At this point, I wouldn't expect to see 32 cores on AM5 (not that it matters).

Intel might have an Arrow Lake Refresh or something else on the same socket, but it's still unclear. I'd consider getting Arrow Lake if Micro Center had a great bundle deal. The socket being neglected doesn't matter that much if you build with no expectation of upgrading the CPU.

Yeah, I meant 9700X, which is that 8 core Ryzen you mention. That seems like the sweet spot as the PS5 also has 8 cores, so it should be able to play all current gen games better. But for around the same price, you can also get the 265K now with 20 cores, that will crush it for productivity work. If you play above 1080p resolution, you may have a hard time telling the difference between them anyways.

Dang. Been out of the game for a hot minute!

Amd has been kicking Intel's butt....if you do any amount of gaming, id get an amd X3D CPU like the 9800x3d. If you don't game or do anything intensive, then the CPU doesn't really matter.
I'm still unsure about these Ultra cpu's.

Would steer clear of Intel. They've not been doing well as a company in the past 5 years. Would buy AMD as Intel is going through some major changes such as partnering with TSMC to run their fabs. TSMC would take a 20% stake in the new organization, and Intel and the other investors would control the rest. In exchange, TSMC would reportedly provide Intel with information about how it builds its chips and provide training assistance for Intel's personnel. I personally don't want to buy chips from a company who's struggling to know "how it builds its chips".

If it's just spreadsheets and Internet, probably not worth the upgrade.

If you really want to, I'd go amd or 12/13/14th gen inten over the Ultra

I never understood the concern when you are buying something current gen about future socket compatability.
I SUPPOSE if your intent is to make sure you always have the latest CPU in it, sure, but if its something where you are thinking of swapping it out for something newer a couple of years down the road, chances are there are going to be something that is going to make it worthwhile to swap your motherboard at the same time.
