And believe me, I've tried them all.
Long story short, one of those free pens was a 0.5mm Pilot G2 that's continued hanging around the kitchen table for several years now. I've discovered that I can actually write well with it. Every time one of these posts comes up, I've contemplated getting into the "buying pens" hobby ... but to what end?
So, after seeing reviews like yours, I decided this very morning to splurge $4 on this:

I'd prefer a non-ballpoint to be capped, but hopefully $4 scratches that itch. In my pocket(s), I will continue carrying a Zebra F301 that has never leaked (or been crushed.)
Considering you have a drawer full of them, you understand that pain all too well!

If you're looking for an upgrade to the Zebra F301, you should consider checking out the Zebra F701. It's a full metal version with no plastic bits. With a little modification, you can even fit a Fisher Space Pen refill inside.
They work fine for me initially, but then they start to skip if they sit for awhile after the plastic seal has been removed from the end. Apparently the gel dries out in the tip.
