I had my 3rd gen for about 4 years. It was great until the battery stopped charging. The wifi is setup to not run if it senses the battery is unable to charge. Took me trying to reattach it about a dozen times before I looked up why it wasn't connecting...Had to get the 4th gen in the middle of winter. All in all it's a pretty nice improvement over 3rd gen except the front display material. 3rd gen was glass and the 4th gen is some sort of plastic that literally scratched while cleaning it with a glasses cloth 🙄.

I just got an email and Nest is deprecating the 1st and 2nd gen models. They will still work, but no updates and no cloud access. 3rd Gen is next people.

I've had zero issues with mine, but I'll probably just get a cheap Honeywell. They offered a 4th gen for $150.
I actually found this thread due to receiving the same email a few moments ago as well. I am trying to decide between the nest or some other brand as I have not had any issues with the nest over the 10+ years I have had the thermostat, but I am getting tired of them deprecating their hardware and the awful home app is enough to make me consider jumping to another brand.

I have 2 gen 2s and a gen 3. I got the same email and trying to figure out what to do. I feel like they will do the same to gen 3 a few years down the road. May be time to jump ship.

After reading your post, I ordered one @ $58. It camE almost brand new with plastic cover the screen. I think people was buying then return after the rebate from ultility company. Installed. Like the screen color is always on. The T5 is not. Thank you.
Fantastic! They truly seem too good to be true, especially for that price. You're probably right about the rebate returns. The app is also great if you need to turn the unit on or off if you're out of town, or if you need to adjust the temperature remotely. That's fantastic that you got a great deal on it and are happy! just an FYI, the 1st and 2nd gen ones will still work, but the smart features won't work. so you'll have to physically adjust the thermostat. The Gen 3's work just fine.

Just a FYI with smart google products is they will eventually change something to break the functionality.

My thermostat stopped responding to voice commands from my mini's just a couple days ago. Nothing changed just something google decided to do.

Specifically, "turn thermostat on" worked for the past 3 years, now when I issue the same command it says "sorry it looks like that thermostat hasnt been set up yet"...

I can still turn on my thermostat from the google home app or the nest app, so it is set up.

On the off chance someone from google reads this, please stop breaking your smart products!
As if on cue - they don't want to stop breaking their products, too much money in them doing it: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2...in-europe/

Deliberately ending support for perfectly functioning devices because hey, why not make you go buy a new one?

Do NOT buy their products, they will abandon you or **** you as soon as they can - and Google isn't unique here, it's the entire subscription/connection business model.

Just opened mine... It's scratched like crazy. And it looks dirty in top of all the scratches. The items were just freely flopping around in the box without even bubble wrap. This doesn't seem refurbished, it seemed heavily used

Google sent me an email saying they are going to make me upgrade since I have gen 2. No nest app functionality anymore, making it essentially useless if i can't turn on the air from my bed

Please do NOT buy this. I received one today and it's scratched all over like it's been used for 10 years. I have never seen such a used product like this being sold as refurbished. I can further disbelieve why a thermostat can be in such bad condition. Lost all my trust in Woot now.

I ended up buying the Honeywell that was mentioned earlier in the thread. I got the like new one from Amazon Resale. It was complete and I was about to install it without an issue.
