This bar bent on me when I had 245lbs loaded, putting way too much strain on my upper traps and causing aggravation. I would NOT recommend this bar if you're actually moving any sort of weight. Be warned.

Thanks for all the tips everyone. I picked up the dicks set today. I won't be doing deadlifts with it so nonstandard diameter is ok. Once someone mentioned the rubber smell with the bumper plates I couldn't risk it. I'm really sensitive to that for some reason. Appreciate all the tips and advice!

The walmart one or Dicks?

I've also read that these bumper plates have a distinct gas/oder and should be left out side for a period of time before using

Yes. Distinct odor. You can air them outside, but smell never goes completely away. I have mine in a garage gym, so no problem with very light smell (now been 6-8 months). But I would not use these inside your home. Especially a small apartment or in your bedroom or something like that. It would smell forever. Go with iron for inside the home gym. Rubber is okay for garage, basement, patio, or outdoor gym.

I've been buying pairs from Walmart over the last year or so as they go on sale, and just about have a full set now. They have the 10 pound colored pairs for $15 right now, which is the last ones I needed to complete the set.

I don't recommend the 10's. I might return them. You can hold them in your hands and bend them back-and-forth, very flimsy and floppy. The 15 pounds I have are very stable and stiff. So 15's about the smallest usable ones.

I have 5 and 10 pound iron plates I put on the ends to use as add on change plates. Might just stick with that and return the 10 pound bumpers.

Ahhh good point. I was thinking of getting rubber 5lb plates to add to bumper set but may be really flimsy unless it's small like iron and not skinny like Olympic.

This cast iron 35 lbs plate is on sale for $25 (single) when you clip the coupon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088B9S6ZL

Coupon appears to work for multiple qtys as well, not just one unit.

If you get the 5lb rubber plates that are called "change plates" or "fractional plates", then those are okay. Those have a much smaller diameter, and are made to throw on the ends of a stack of bumper plates, for small incremental weight. But the 10lb Walmart bumper plates are full size diameter (same diameter as the big plates), so they are really thin and flimsy. I'm sure you could even fold them over in your hands and break them in two, they are that flimsy. Hard to believe they would even sell that size.

I felt bad ordering a couple 15lb kettlebells from Amazon last week. This is another level of evil!
