Anyone know if this one allows you to update firmware on the NVMe itself? The ones I've tried won't let the firmware recognize the drive, probably because it's coming through the USB.

I don't think there's any that allow you to do that. I had the same problem with multiple expensive closures. Especially with Samsung drives.

I figured that was the case, but with how many of these cases get advertised on here, I thought maybe someone hit the jackpot with one. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Newegg has had this at 11.99 for a bit now, the second cheapest 10Gbps NVME enclosure:
https://www.newegg.com/orico-m2pv...1DSK089803

The next expensive is 12.99:
https://www.newegg.com/p/0VN-0003...1DSJVZ5893

Only other differences I see are first has an aluminum top and supports SATA, second seems to be all plastic no sata (16.99 version for SATA if you need that). The second one says 'UASP', 'TRIM', and 'S.M.A.R.T.' are supported while the first doesn't. Can anyone that has the first one (current Slickdeals deal) confirm? Apparently in windows defrag, it will have a trim option if it does.

UASP: https://superuser.com/questions/7...is-enabled
TRIM: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us...al-usb-ssd

Some research on what these are:
Compared with the traditional USB 3.0 BOT, UASP has a 70% increase in read speed at peak performance and a 40% increase in write speed. Another benefit of UASP is that it reduces the processor resources required by traditional USB when transferring data. At the same peak of the test, UASP shows that it can save up to 80% of processor resources.
per: https://www.minitool.com/lib/uasp.html

TRIM is a command with the help of which the operating system can tell the solid state drive (SSD) which data blocks are no longer needed and can be deleted, or are marked as free for rewriting...TRIM command to wipe the storage space being erased. This ensures a faster writing speed when new data is stored in that area.

SMART is health monitoring on the device

The joke is the more expensive one is terrible, it has a heatsink covered by a plastic cover, which is absurd.

I've only ever bought the nvme only version which supports trim.

Absolutely and you should: https://www.station-drivers.com/i.../?Itemid=0

Edit: Seems I misread your question. You can and should update the firmware of the enclosure's Realtek controller which fixes a lot of connectivity and compatibility issues.

I think they mean the drive itself.

None of these allow that, you have to directly install into computer to do that.

The fastest trick is to get a cheap $5-10 pci-e to m.2 adapter card to easily swap into a computer.

That firmware download said it had a virus and windows blocked it?

Ive has bad luck with these from Orico, i use them for all Sata stuff and they are really good, but when cloning large drive these always just fail around halfway. I got some Ugreen ones that work perfectly. I think the oricio uses realtek controller and ugreen uses asmedia ones.

if you'll be swapping drives a lot, get a different enclosure model. This one isn't tool-less.

For SATA the $5 AliExpress ones work great. I use NVMe on this one and it is working fine.
