There are two different models of this mug. One model has a slick, gray, teflon-like interior, which I believe you are referring to. Some have complained about the material on the inside chipping, which yes, I agree is dangerous.

The models I've bought on amazon that have this teflon-like material are Zojirushi SM-SD60BC and SM-SA60BA. I've owned and used them for almost a decade, water and coffee, and have never had any of the chipping issues people have mentioned. Like teflon pots and pans, you shouldn't use metal brushes to clean them. But I can understand the concern.

The linked deal is stainless steel on the inside, just like most travel mugs. The model number is SM-SHE60BZ. It looks identical on the outside, but it's not the same thing.

Great* thermal performance. My primary beef is that the silicone seals suck up taste very easily. Going from coffee to water pretty much requires a hot dishwasher cycle to evict the coffee flavor - no rinse and re-use. Also, the flow is fairly slow through the sip top.

*I filled it with nugget ice on a Thursday morning and left it in my pack over a weekend; there was still some ice in the bottle (along with the melt water) on Saturday night.

I have a couple of these as well as the older design. This newer design is sleeker but the cap is way less durable. If you drop it, there is a good chance the lid will crack. There is no real increased thermal efficiency on the newer designs either.

Forever chemicals on the inside, if you care.

These water bottles are soooo much better than Stanley or Camelbak. And yes, I actually did a 5 hour test under controlled environment using the brand new water bottles. The elephant definitely keeps the hot liquid very hot for a long time.

Thank you so much for this. I am a real afficionada of these mugs and own several and wondered about the difference. I LOVE these and now I'll see which I have.

For anybody who encounters stinky silicone, bake the pieces in a low oven. Like 250 for 30 minutes or so. They will be stink free after they cool off.

Quote from Cheesecycle : Keeps coffee hot for a crazy amount of time. Too long, IME! I usually need to brew into a cup and then transfer it over to the Zojirushi before going on shift. If I don't do that the coffee will be too hot to even sip for half the shift!Still, one of the best mugs ever. My first one I forgot on the SSN 784 before it left for sea trials. I'll sadly never see that mug again! It served me well lol
Have you tried adding 1-2 ice cubes? Or the metal ice cubes that doesn't water down the drink

I purchased mine in 2019, and the paint has started chipping over the past two years. I've hardly used it since COVID, as I've been working primarily from home.

Does anyone know if they offer replacements or repairs for issues like paint chipping?

Thanks!
It's just added character. It still works?

I've got three of these and still tempted to buy. They are just so amazing. Keep one for water and one for coffee. Don't mix. Taste will be off.

Thank you so much for pointing this out! I didn't know that they made travel mugs that are stainless steel on the inside.

That's a great idea. Unfortunately, no ice maker or room for a tray in our communal coffee mess/snack shack
