Yeah, they feel totally different. In the original, once things start going downhill it doesn't really stop to take a breath. The extended versions bake in the dread.

I liked the turret part in a vacuum, but it taints the movie. It turns the aliens into "easily" killable foes while also reducing their perceived intelligence.

That's an excellent point. I'd thought of the sentry guns scene as the only addition from the special edition I wished was in the theatrical cut but that's a great reason for it to be excised.
