Super handy if you've moved into a house with random wiring that you don't know where it goes/what it does like we did

Nope. It can be used to trace many NON-energized cables. It won't last long if you try to use it on energized power cables.

I've used my fluke toner to trace 120 vac wires that were disconnected from the power, so yes. In my case I was searching for with wire from a switch to find the end.

Do you think it can detect the signal through a thick tile?

I don't know about this unit, but the closer to the wire the better chance you have for finding the tone. Mine won't tone thru a conduit, but it will thru sheet rock if the wire is close to it.

How far from the wire can you be before it becomes unreliable? I'd like to map out a dead zone on a security system I inherited. I have no idea which sensors are involved so if the detector needs to be within, say, an inch that's probably going to be a non-starter for me.

It will work through tile or anything not metal. I tried a similar device through metal siding and the signal does not pass through the metal.

Usually about one foot away from the wire will get you a signal. Two feet away there will be no signal.
If possible, connect one wire to a good ground and the other to the wire you want to trace.

There's a really good video on YouTube about how this product works. A guy made a small version of a wall and showed how you can trace cables inside the wall with this tool.

I have a commercial property with hundreds of Ethernet cables, I have no idea where they are going. Will this help me find where they end up? How does it work? Appreciate any insight.
