Never used one of these, is this good for just putting nails in wood? Strengthen a fence?

18GA is more for fine work. Like trim work, nailing things for clamp strength while wood glue sets, building smaller wood items, etc.

Used brad nailers are very cheap on fleabay. You can score one for $15-20.

This nailer is for finish carpentry. Case, base, shoe molding, etc. For a fence it depends on the type of wood that you are securing. Generally for outdoor, like a fence, you want to use hot dipped galvanized ring shank nails that are mostly fired through a coil nailer. If this is a one time thing, just use stainless steel screws and an impact driver. Both have very good holding power.
