My favorite laptop ever. Keyboard, battery life, screen are terrific. Just make sure your software works on ARM processor. Games don't always do so as one example.

You'll have to check ARM compatibility.

Yes, but Check with the high school what apps they use across all classes, then check SnapX cpu/Windows for ARM compatibility!
This is because some apps simply do not run in SnapX cpus, so if it doesn't, you're stuck.
Now, for the basics - Microsoft Office (word, excel, PowerPoint, outlook), ms teams, ms edge browser - if that's all school uses, then you'll be fine. Else, pass and buy an Intel/AMD laptop.

Next to none. A bit louder than MacBook Pro but not too much

Thanks for the input.

My surface laptop sounds like a jet engine for simple web browsing...

My mom only use the laptop for regular use (non-gaming). Like MS Word, Excel, web browser. Is 16GB RAM enough?
16GB of RAM is plenty.

As long as you don't need a ton of local storage, this is a great device. You might also consider HP OmniBook X which are regularly on-sale with X-Elite processors for a bit less money. We have both in our household and although the Surface is nicer, Omnibook is a relatively close second.
I admittedly do prefer omnibook's feel. It's based on their business laptop chassis and just feels a little more nicer. But both are solid.

I was able to get an openbox + referb omnibook x elite with 1tb of storage for $380 at microcenter about a month ago. They even let me open the box in store and see if there were any issues. Microcenter still sells some, albeit the price fluctuates.

I was surprised how snappy this thing is. Battery is good, atleast 10-15 hours for using edge.

Wow, that's a screaming deal. I also got the OmniBook as a Micro Center refurb but I paid $460, which to be honest is still a great price for a solid unit. The SL7 on the other hand we got new for $1000...I think OmniBook wins for me when factoring in price, but I definitely prefer the haptic touchpad of the SL7.

Wow that's a nice price! I have the 32GB version, and I definitely need the extra RAM, 16GB just doesn't cut it for me even doing lite tasks (lots of Edge tabs). Combine that with this having an NPU makes me highly recommend the 32GB to everyone. Day to day use is amazing, could not be happier.
Fan noise is nonexistent during normal use. Trackpad is stellar, what all trackpads should be. Keyboard is great. Screen is bright and crisp. ARM compatibility is a thing sure, but I've had no true incompatibilities, only oddities. For example the OS threading really doesn't like oxipng for some reason. Some specific AI x64 libraries translate to CPU fine, but using x64 translation + GPU ONNX can be hit or miss.

Snapdragon processors in laptops are best battery savers than anything.

Not a good price for third-party refurb Snapdragon, IMO.
For $600-$700, one can get the top-end Elite Snapdragon (vs. the mid-tier Plus here) with 512gb storage (vs. only 256gb here), and OLED screen (vs. IPS here). True, it won't be the MS Surface, but will be made by Asus, HP, Lenovo or Samasung.

Same. If you're spending over $500, you might as well get a M4 Macbook Air for $850.

I'll only buy this if it drops down to $200.
