The main issue I have with hall sensors is that they only measure current in 1 direction. A battery shunt is the same price, even less, and can measure current coming in and going out, even at the same time. You'd have to buy 2 of these hall sensors and set one up for incoming current and the other for outgoing to achieve the same thing. Doing it with 2 hall sensors is a pain in the ass and more components to install, not to mention extra cost and extra setup steps. A 30 dollar shunt can do all of that and simplify installation.

heres a 20 dollar shunt after you clip the coupon. It has decent reviews. I think a lot of bad reviews for devices like this are user error, like beginners that really dont know what they are doing.

Thats really something you should be able to figure out on your own. Read the description. It clearly says it has a battery voltage range of 9-80V and works with LiFePO4, AGM, and Gel Batteries. So unless your battery voltage is under 9 or over 80, then it will work with it.

I have that one. It's a great unit, but the build quality is terrible. Buttons, wire connectors, and mainly the display really sucks. It's almost unreadable at times (too much light or near darkness, say in a battery box).

Haven't yet found a better alternative that addresses all these points.

I did see some other reviews about screen brightness. That's something I could live with, considering everything else it does all for 20 bucks. It's less than half the price of this and sure, it's definitely not as pretty and it doesn't have a touch screen, but it more than makes up with function. Aesthetics are important to some but I've always been function over aesthetics. Especially very helpful function. Being able to monitor incoming and outgoing current to keep tabs on the batteries real time overall capacity is a huge advantage over just monitoring outgoing current. For that to even be accurate, you can't just partially charge the battery. You have to charge to 100% every time. If you put a partial charge on it during use, it messes up the calibration. A shunt is superior in almost every way to a hall sensor.

I'm guessing it's actual function makes it a great unit. I can see that. As long as it doesn't just stop working or break, poor build quality can be overlooked if it provides superior function. Especially for 20 bucks. Even a poor build quality functioning shunt offers so many more advantages over a quality built hall sensor.
