I paid $18 in 2018. Highly recommended. The degree to which you can do without them depends on how many buckets of nails you're pulling.

Hear the 16d nails laughing as you approach with this tool, "Hahaha 11-in, you call THAT a puller?"

In its defense, probably good for smaller nails in softwoods.

I have to deal with the attic at a new house and the nails are terrifying. Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters.

The cats-paw / pry-bar styles? If you can't rely on the head of the nail holding up, you've still got a heck of a grip on whatever's left. For the same reason, you can also twist out stripped screws if you've got it handy - faster than Vise Grips.

Anyone know how this is for pulling pallet nails? I have been thinking of getting a 36" or 42" wrecking bar.

If you have an air compressor, they make a pneumatic nail remover that you can use to remove nails from boards that have already been separated from the pallet. It's no help to remove nails before the boards are separated. Something similar to this - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BCWVC4J2

I have this exact nail puller. To be honest, pulling apart pallets can be hit or miss (regardless of the tools). If you want bullet proof disassembly, look for a deck wrecker and use a pneumatic nail puller. If you're lucky, this will work just fine..... My pallet work has resulted in anything but good luck.

Yep, I have yet to learn how they get smooth-sided nails to stick harder than ring-shank. Apply overwhelming force and the wood splits but the nails don't come loose.

Best technique I've found is to brace the pallet, square up a heavy block on the target board, then give it a good, square whack with a hand sledge. Still mixed results but better than splintering the whole thing piece-by-piece.

As to this gadget, I just use water pump pliers. They've always worked.

This tool is indispensable for for three board fence repair. It laughs at pneumatic driven ring shank nails in 1.25 inch oak hardwood boards.
The key is the leverage, the pivot point is right at the grabber. Much more efficient that hammers or pry bars.

If I pull a board with a big pry bar, I hit the sharp end of the nail a couple times with a hammer just to expose the head, then use this tool to pull the nail from the other side.
One of my rules around the farm is remove/trash the nails as soon as they are exposed. This prevents stepping on a board with exposed nails or expensive barn calls for the horses.
This tool grips the nail and pulls it easily without flinging it across the pasture.
