These are very poisonous, so not kid/pet friendly.

I know someone who was trying to trim off a few brown tips of some dieffenbachia leaves. Instead of finding scissors, they just used their fingernails to perforate the leaf to cut off the ugly bits. Their hands started feeling hot but washing wasn't helping. Got actual burns underneath their fingernails that turned into blisters, because of the dieffenbachia leaf sap. Was definitely unexpected.

Received mine today, packing was great and plant looks healthy. Luckily my dogs and kids are not indoor plant eaters, so worked for us

What do they eat? Only animal products? That's sad that they're missing out on fruits and vegetables and grains.

Sounds like fungus gnats - a nuisance pest but not typically damaging unless there's an absolute infestation of them. As another has said, get some sticky yellow fungus gnat traps to catch the adults that can fly.
Additionally, to kill them at a young stage, water with a 'tea' made using 'mosquito bits' (or mosquito dunks) - the BTI bacteria kills fungus gnat eggs/larvae too.
Here to confirm that it is likely that larvae of fungus gnats came in the soil. Happens with the soil purchased from Amazon or other vendors. Sometimes soil comes with larvae. I tried various methods of getting rid of them, and mosquito bites were the most effective (I also tried using sand as a top layer to prevent larvae from burrowing, adding peroxide into water when watering the plants, and lastly, I tried cinnamon powder). Gnats are generally harmless but annoying, e.g., flying in front of your face when you looking at your monitor at night (they are attracted to some light spectrum), dead gnats by the window, etc. Mostquito bits was super helpful so now I have less concerns with buying soil on Amazon.

A nickname for this plant is "dumb cane", because the toxic sap can render one unable to speak. I had one, it was nice looking, and easy to grow.
Just don't eat it.
