What's the difference between this and the adult version (other than price)? Can I just buy this for myself?

Its the same as adult version but comes with a free case, and there are not any advertisements (I have the kids paperwhite version and so does my wife).

The kids version might also have some other subscription based freebies, but I get my ebooks from the library anyways so not familiar with those.

You get a 6 month Kindle Kids+ subscription as well. But yeah, that, the cover, warranty, and no front cover ads is it.

I still have my old 2015 (bought in 2018) 6" Paperwhite. A bit slow but works good. How much better is the 7" screen?

According to recent Amazon reviews, when you use this Kindle in the adult mode, the ads will appear. Can anyone confirm this?

Since my oldest is 7 years old he reads a lot of picture books which I feel are better viewed in color. However I've seen that the color version has very mixed reviews in addition to the much larger price tag. Does anyone else have any experience with this?

FYI it literally says so on the product page.

Does Amazon ever give an elevated trade value for older Kindle models (e.g., black Friday, etc)?

I can confirm - I bought this exact model and don't use it in Kids mode and I get ads. My wife has the previous generation (bought as a Kids version) and does not get ads, so it is something Amazon changed in the past year or two.
