Super easy verification, you just need a .edu email. No studentbeans or id.me! Thanks OP!

As of 47-year-old pursuing my masters, this might come in handy!

Even if you don't want to use Gemini, this gives you Google one (and up to 2tb storage space) so it's useful for anybody with an edu address. Thanks!

I've had Gemini and Claude.ai since November and have been using them both almost daily. Claude is more accurate and more "trustworthy".

It's very generous of them to offer even more ways for them to harvest every scrap of data about your life.
One way to gauge how much data harvesting is to look at the permissions list for each AI app.
Eg. Meta's latest AI app wants to suck up every last secret from your phone with a dizzying list of permissions, yet others like Anthropic want just a handful.
....
Anyways, free Gemini isn't "amazing" unless you're pushing thru books upon books and really trying to graduate with a d.u.n.c.e degree by making AI do all your homework.
Easy enough to sign up to the main ones - perplexity, grok, anthropic, DeepSeek, and use it with the free CoPilot on Windows and Edge.
This is because Not one AI always gets it right, so using a few is the way to shortcut work with correct answers.
I dare you. "Using the wholesale bulk prices of rice and orange chicken for restaurants, calculate the cost of goods for a plate of 11 oz of rice and 6 oz of orange chicken." You'll immediately see which AI are "idiots" doing this simple work task.... Most can't even identify bulk packages of frozen orange chicken for food service....

Any simple way to get more out of AI than just prompts?

What do you want?

I use it for writing short code for my home tech lab and for troubleshooting different things. via: https://aistudio.google.com/

So, is this Google's way of telling college students to cheat with AI? 🤣

Gemini 2.5 pro was released in the end of March. And it's somewhat ahead of Claude now.

Not that I know of. I really wish they did though, especially when someone like a student will be using it as a tool.

I have a gemini subscription (among several others) and Gemini ROCKS for transcription (try it with very difficult names and pharmaceutical drugs, its wildly accurate) and callbacks to your own data. Outside of that, I find that it lags behind its competition for more complex prompts, and the image generation just got a lot better-but was lousy on its earlier releases. Medical personnel absolutely love it, as long as they're allowed to use it. It's hidden strength seems to be using your own data (i'm an old google apps for business user) and keeping you on track. I think they wanted speed when they released it and now they're adding complexity. It's still very fast.
It's on the right side of like every single google thing and I don't like that.

The advanced subscription is worth it at 20 bucks/month, but there are better options- you cannot beat Free though! Huge advantage as I found the "free" gemini to be lacking.

How dare you not share your data with the overlords and be independent?

This is also insanely fun and a time-machine-esque task where like 5 hours have flown by and you're face hurts from laughing. ChatGPT immediately went into deep research and got into shipping lanes and shit. I find with many of them, if you bully them- they'll usually come back with a "more correct" answer, which is also kinda fun-but makes me feel bad? The hell's that about?
