$249 in Florida. I typed in some random zip codes and never found it for $150. Well worth it if you can get it for that.

Edit: Found it in an Ohio store for $149. If you live in the Midwest check your Lowes!

Personal preference, but I wouldn't want a Kobalt set as my primary. As a backup when needing a 2nd of a size they're fine and this would be an ok price. But there's too much slop and slip with their sockets. For the occasional use that's ok, but if you use them a lot, it's too many busted knuckles and too much frustration waiting to happen.

Agreed. Homeowner basic use. If doing your own mechanic work, these are going to leave you frustrated. Go with gear wrench for value. There are other brands like Milwaukee or Icon from harbor freight that are a lot more money but worth it. You will save yourself a lot of money by doing your own work. However, if your tools suck you will likely give up with bloody knuckles and rounded bolts.

is the Kobalt set even lower quality than craftsman, hart or harbor freight?

i did a ton of brake jobs, oil changes, bike mods and a lot of other work for 10 years using a mid grade craftsman socket set with HF ratchets. Never an issue.

Modern Craftsman non-full polish? Probably about the same. But comparing Kobalt to my early 90's USA made Craftsman, the Kobalt nearly made me want to throw the set in the trash. I've never used any Hart hand tools, and HF has tiers of brands. I also haven't used much of it either.

Icon and DeWalt were the first two that popped into my head. Milwaukee was next but they rarely go on sale and they don't really sell a "mechanics" set with everything most people need. DeWalt sets go on sale all the time, and people seem happy with the tools. I didn't think of Gear Wrench, but they test well with Project Farm and others IIRC.

I've bought a few of the kobalt mechanics sets in the past and they are decent quality and put up to abuse. Meanwhile I have cracked craftsman, harbor freight and husky sockets and broken craftsman ratchets galore. Never broke a kobalt socket or ratchet yet and they have been my go-to for the past 3 years.

The only bad thing I can say is they reverse the pawl for their ratchets which takes getting used to. Flipping it to the right to loosen is what I'm used to on craftsman/harbor freight/sk/Stanley stuff I own but the kobalt is to the left >_
