This does have upgradeable SSD. I got a base model and upgraded to 2TB for under 650 total. You do need to buy a special SSD rather than any off the shelf one.

Can someone confirm if the Studio can have RAM upgraded or if it's soldered to the board?
No such thing as RAM upgrades on modern Mac SOCs.

Does this thing have enough ram to run decent AI models locally?

your opinion of value is different than Apple's. Thus Apple must be wrong.

Yes. You will be constrained by how big of a model you can run. My M1 Pro mac book pro (Mbp) 16Gb can run the latest Mixtral-7b model on LM Studio for example. My dad's 8gb M1 Mbp can handle most models around 3B.
Y'all, it's time to accept that these companies are tooled up for this soldered RAM for the long run. They need it soldered to get the UI/UX the majority of their customers expect. Let's see how AMDs mobile chips compete.

All M based Macs (M1, M2 etc…) run unified memory. This memory is attached to the board and isn't upgradable as it is part of the system architecture. As an owner of the M4 Studio, trust me when I say that the M4 Pro Mini is a powerhouse and ALL you need even as a "mini power user". There were certain reasons I chose to stay with the Mac Stuido but I wanted to save money and drop to the M4 Pro Mini so bad.

Bought an enclosure and a 2tb nvme SSD for around $200. Though OS isn't installed on it. Can run VM off it from VMware and it's thunderbolt 4
Same, got a deal on the new Acasis TB5 enclosure and threw my music and photo libraries on it. They load as fast as if it was built in storage.

24 GB is enough to run something fun. The CPU isn't all that fast. A 16GB video card will be much, much faster, but won't run as large a model. Then again, not many models are going to fit into 20 GB of free RAM but not fit into 16GB of VRAM.

36GB is another story. Same with 64 and 96. From what I've read, not many models between 96 and 128 but you can always run more than one. 256 and 512 let you get serious, except that no matter what, the Mac CPU will be pretty slow. Still, at that point, you can run a model that won't run at all without building a custom machine for a lot more $$$. Just slowly.

In the end, I'm just going to wait.

There are no games played. It's called supply and demand. If I sold grass for $1mill/gram, and I have buyers for it, then why would I ever decrease the price.

If anyone is in china for travel or business, the base model has been < $400 USD at most retailers with no tax for a while now due to local electronics subsidies. They are subsidizing $70 off any mac mini model at the moment so you could apply it to a more expensive model as well if preferred.

So, I'm sure this is PCI GEN 4. Do you think PCI GEN5 enclosures with TB5 will be coming down the way?
