As a former chef and a smashburger connoisseur, I will say the shape of the press is more of an asset than the weight/brand.

I was gifted this one several years ago and it's the only press I use. Has a lot of weight, and the circular shape helps press your burger balls into nice thin patties.

(Protip: cover your burger with a small sheet of parchment paper to prevent your press from sticking to the meat)
So I own this one, it's extremely well-built, but I definitely bought it for the wrong reason. I thought I could use it for smashburgers, but it's honestly way too large and the ridges make it really ineffective for that use. This is NOT a fault of the tool, it's one nice piece of equipment, but it's really for searing steaks, making paninis, maybe even making large quesadillas.
Ended up going with a generic, flat, circular press on Amazon and it's been fantastic.
I'm tellin' ya...if you want paper thin patties that get nice and crispy- that's the one you want

Bacon doesn't need a press- if it's curling up it means there's too much heat. Add a ladle of water to the top of your bacon to render the fat. Once it evaporates the melted fat will fry the remaining meat.

I use two of these with the larger press for cooking a whole pack of bacon. This is also good for smash burgers with parchment paper between meat and press.

It's more of an asset. If the press is heated, the ridges prevent the meat from sticking.

Like I said above- I like to use a piece of parchment paper on top of the patty to prevent sticking/keep the press clean. Works pretty well.

thank you, very insightful as I was about to pull the trigger on this just for the sole purpose of using for smash burger but glad I didn't with your feedback!

Wouldn't you want a flat one? That one has ridges.

And you probably want a stainless steel one that's easier to clean and maintain.
