Bought this 28tb from Best Buy last month and it had a barracuda inside. I picked up a 14tb and 18tb from seagate and both has Exos inside.

"Enjoy peace of mind with the included limited warranty and Rescue Data Recovery Services"

The recovery service also can't do anything if the platters are scratched. For example, if the HHD tips over while running, this can easily happen. So don't rely on this service, it doesn't replace a backup.

Are there any changes to Seagate's fail rates?

Jury is still out. They're still rating these for only 100 days per year of operation. That indicates that they are rebinning and thus you should not trust these. Not yet anyway.

WD or EXOS. No easy third choice still.

Can anyone confirm if this is one drive or two? And can these be shucked? Bonus for a link to this specific drive shucking YT video.

Is there a way to see if it's exos once you get it without opening it up?

What are the chances this is exo? Is this HAMR tech and do you guys know the downside?
It's unlikely to be an Exos. It's certain to be HAMR, as Seagate's largest non-HAMR CMR drive is 24TB. HAMR drives tend use a little more power and thus run hotter. They may be a tad slower and less tolerant of vibration.

According to Backblaze's [backblaze.com] stats, Seagate is slowly improving and WD is getting worse.

Regardless of the specs, we don't actually know that the new Barracudas are binned drives. My theory is that Seagate repurposed the line from the prior generation HAMR Exos to make these new Barracudas. That particular line of Exos drives never got a retail release and was only available to the general public from resellers of recertified drives. The specs of those old HAMR Exos drives is virtually identical to the new Barracudas, except for the fancy cache and workload rating. The newer HAMR Exos line has different attributes, making it seem less likely that the Barracudas are binned versions of it. That's just my theory.

There is a third option, Toshiba.

It is one drive. The enclosure isn't even big enough to house two. Everyone says they can be shucked.

If Toshiba was competitive, sure. You don't see Tosh deals on SD regularly for a reason.

Like most Japanese companies, they stick to B2B sales.

(Not using reply on mobile to multi person replies, SD always botches them).

No, but we know they are mostly not from experience at this point.

Edit: As others mentioned you can open up the box and check with SMART / CrystalDiskInfo. You just can't tell at retail.

I'd never buy Seagate but appreciate they continue to make larger capacity drives and push these prices – WD is charging this same price for only 16TB in their My Book right now.

One year warranty says how much confidence Seagate has in these drives.

Most people CAN imagine, so they make arrangements for that day.

Same, but after I ordered one and found an EXOS inside, I quickly regretted not ordering a second one - they were soon switched over to Barracudas 🙃

You can plug it in and check if it's EXOS easily with a CrystalDiskInfo, no shucking required. I agree that it's probably not EXOS inside though.
