I did almost always have to contact customer service to get it approved.

You have to register the tool, jump through several hoops of mailing them the receipt and HOPING they update your account to reflect it (or else it'll say "3 years warranty" and they'll deny they ever got your letter unless they make you a "one time exception").
Then, if a tool breaks, you must take it in person to an authorized repair shop of THEIR choosing. It was 1hr40min away for me. I can't afford to spend around four hours to take a $100 tool to them, then another four hours to pick it up. And that's assuming the repair shop actually did their job properly. You hear stories about repair shops losing the tool, not fixing it properly, etc. Ridigd doesn't stand behind them, so they just tell you to take the case to small claims court. For a business that's two hours away. For $100.
I don't know how they handle things if they no longer make spare parts for that tool. Given how they run everything else, you're probably up the creek without a paddle.
I'm sure if you live in a big city, you'll have a repair shop closer to you. Hopefully. Not all of us do though.
Sad truth is...warranties in the USA have no teeth, unlike in the EU and Australia. It's a "trust me bro" warranty here, and you hope they honor their word.

How many batteries will Dewalt or any of the others replace after over 10 years of use?
LSA was easy, the approval took several weeks. May be to avoid people registered their tools when they brought their toool then changed their mind and have them returned.
