Nice! Learned a lot about this HDPE model vs the Tritan plastics because of this listing. HDPE is a softer plastic that is less likely to crack when dropped, and leaches less than Tritan does. It's also much lighter than Tritan. However, it will stain much easier and will retain smells easier than Tritan. It will also deform easier than Tritan will - this can be a boon, as in altitude changes, in which HDPE will suck in instead of creating a vacuum, or a negative, in that Tritan holds its form much better under heat than HDPE.
Ultimately, if you're just storing drinking water in your bottle, HDPE is a good choice. If you're doing anything else, Tritan might be a better one. I ended up picking this up because of these differences. Thanks!

I've been a big fan of Nalgene for years, and currently have 6 of their 32oz bottles - both narrow and wide mouth ones.

As I've learned lately, being BPA free doesn't mean the bottles dont have other BP(X) chemicals in them.

And so, I'm done with these as the daily bottle. I've slowly been adding double-walled stainless steel bottles to use as my daily bottles.

Maybe I'm overreacting or being paranoid, but I've read enough about these forever chemicals to think that eating and drinking out of plastic products isn't that great.

I still have 2 or 3 of these from the 1990s--even before they had loop top lids. These are the OG of Nalgene bottles.

Mine are stained from iced tea, but still going strong.

There's a glass bottle that Wirecutter recommends. Pretty too.

I feel like I wrote this, I'm exactly the same. I still have a bunch of Nalgene bottles, I was using a 40oz version of this for a few years but switched over to tritan style and now i use double-walled blender bottles. I love that I can keep the drink cold with 1 ice cube for hours even with the lid off and no condensation.

Aren't the double-wall ones substantially heavier, though? At home I always use a double-wall, but carry metal on the trail??

You must be doing some serious trail work if a few ounces, or even a pound for that matter, makes a difference in what your legs can handle.

Were those old swiss-made ones with the red loop lids nalgene? Can't remember. I've been meaning to dig out and re-use but didn't know if it was safe or not.

I think those were Sigg.

We have a ton of double wall/insulated metal bottles too, mostly for the car or for the kids at school.

Within 6 months they're all all warped from minor drops, occasionally with vacuum seal breaches.

The worst my Nalgenes ever got was breaking a lid loop after falling 80 feet off a crag. Still works great!

Also, after 30+ Nalgenes in 25 years, I'll also add the old school HDPE hold their paint better, so if measuring volume is important, these do a lot better than Tritan.
