The Sundaras have better bass with a mostly neutral sound signature. They are more detailed, you can hear it specifically when people pluck guitar or string instruments.
Overall they are about the same, I wouldn't bother dwelling in mid-fi if you want a real upgrade, pick up the Audeze LCD-2. They're on sale right now.
I have these hooked up to a Topping DX3 Pro+ and they sound great. I currently have HD 6XX and HE400se headphones. I haven't compared directly with the HE400 yet so no comment there. In some ways these are only a slight step up but I find them more comfortable than both those headphones. That's in part because of the headband and also through lower clamping force. They are heavier than the HD 6XX but with lower clamping force, I find them more comfortable over time. I do like the HD 6XX ear pads better though. I've set a system-wide equalizer using Oratory's settings, which isn't strictly necessary because they sound great without it. On my Mac I use Soundsource to handle the EQ and other sound settings. Output is set at a 96K sample rate.
They are subtly but noticeably brighter in sound than the HD 6XX and have a wider sound stage. The widened sound stage helps make music more immersive and natural. They also provide somewhat more clarity than the HD 6XX. I've been doing mostly lossless streaming from Apple Music but have also done some trials with local FLAC files. I think my HD 6XX will get a lot less use now, partially for sound quality reasons but also for overall comfort.
Considering this price for refurbished headphones is less than the typical HD 6XX price, this is an easy suggestion over those. Note that an amp is not strictly necessary but they will benefit from one.
On my phone I'm using a JCALLY JM20 Max Portable DAC-Amplifier to drive them and no system-wide EQ (using an iPhone) -- they sound great.
Speakers offer a much better soundstage that earphone can provide. You have more breath of room and space. Speakers also mimic the real world soundstage of live music much better than earphones can EVER produce.
I've regretted the fact of buying any fancy open back earphones whenever I find myself in a social settings where people get irritated when YOU can't keep your own music to yourself in a closed back environment. I've found out that the only ones who actually use open back earphones are obnoxious people who like to FORCE SHARE their music with other, whether other people like it or not. OR they just like to think they have some kind of super human hearing thinking they can hear more than other people.
Yeah that pretty much sums up what people who like open backed earphones are like.
