I would probably get the Lodge over this. Made in USA, with a known level of quality, and no mystery meat cast iron recipe.

Also, if you're experienced with cast iron, I have had really good experiences buying Lodge pieces as an "Amazon Resale" deal. People tend to return them for extremely small issues (like a small seasoning flaw, easily corrected), or even no flaw at all. There's not a lot to go wrong as long as they aren't physically broken in transit.

Totally agree. I bought an off brand cast iron skillet set from Amazon off here some years ago and had one crack in half while cooking on the stovetop. It made a sound like a gunshot going off and was very scary.

I only buy Lodge now and have no issues.

I don't want to downplay your experience, and I'm sorry you went through that, but casting iron is like a 2500 year old technology. I find it extremely hard to believe brand is meaningful here at population (i.e. non-anecdotal) scale.

I guess cast iron can have "thermal shock" when heated on high quickly on an induction stove. I really didn't know that until just now and that is likely the reason that it cracked. But all I know is that I've been using the same stove and heating my Lodge pans on high quickly (maybe I shouldn't be doing that now that I've read about thermal shock) and it's not happened since. And I have about 20 Lodge pans all different types. No cracks ever.

Great dutch oven to use for baking artisan bread (boules), or for roasts. 5 qt is good enough for a small-mid family.

As others pointed out, I would go for the Lodge set, even if it's $20 more. Just a known, reliable brand even if they aren't perfect. Buy it once, you probably won't ever need to buy another, but if it does get ruined you won't be set back too much.

So you only know one thing, loosely, about the iron casting process and you think that's somehow the only pertinent aspect? smh
Branding is very important, as with it carries the quality control to not allow a wide range of the same faults to occur in the raw materials used and the smelting and casting process, that have occurred over those 2,500 years and even today.
Concrete, also for instance, is an over 5,000 year old technology. The fact is.... that technology is more astoundingly advanced in this century and even in just the last decade, than you will even 0.01% comprehend. Just like cast iron.

I don't know if I'd assume the one thing a person says about a topic is literally all they know about it, but if you wanna go through life using that logic, feel free.

Have a nice day.
