Regarding this specifically. The lug (tread) depth just isn't enough for more technical stuff or running on hard packed snow.
The fit is good. They are lightweight and comfortable. I've used them for short distances (4 to 5 mile runs) and ran a 50k (31 miles) in them so they can definitely handle up to that distance. For this price, if you're a casual runner or walker, I'd pick up a pair. Merrell is under-rated and don't get anywhere near the hype of larger shoe companies, but they put out some good shoes at much cheaper price points.

Some of the review sites that do their own measuring report this shoe to have much more drop (11mm) than it claims, which if true, would make it too steep of an angle for most people.
