Just bought one of these but have not yet fit it for my mouth. Just had to have a tooth pulled because I fractured it due to grinding. If your dentist has been warning you that you grind your teeth, and like me you think "ok, whatever", just know, it can get really bad! You do NOT want to deal with a fractured tooth!!

I don't normally comment but I have to do it for this case. Hopefully I help reduce future TMJ disorder. I am a dentist who sees TMJ patients. I am personally against these devices for patients to wear over night. They are great if you are using it for sport (short period of time) but these devices can accidentally damage your joint. Teeth grinding is a disease with many underlying issues and most of the time people go through their life without noticing any symptoms. My recommendation is that if you are going to get a "occlusal guard", get it properly fitted by a professional.

There are a lot of really good start ups doing custom fit guards for far less than a dentist. I used Remi and was pretty impressed.

How does this compare to the $300 I just paid to get fitted at my dentist?
You got off cheap. I forget the brand name I got but mine was also supposed to help with Sleep Apnea (eliminating the CPAP). $1200.

For what it is worth... not a dentist.. don't play one on TV.. but I have been using just the cheap ones off Ebay or Amazon.. not sure which.. that you just put in hot water to soften and then put in your mouth and mold to your teeth.. Been using them for years and they last about a year each for a couple bucks each. I know dentists recommend special custom fitted guards (marketing?) but my dentist told me that she doesn't see any issues with the cheap ones I am using..

And yes, those advertised look exactly like the kind I have been using.. just they come with no packaging or marketing materials.. just the guards in a plastic baggie..

This is fine for what it is (and certainly cheaper than the $20 ones you get at Walgreens), but I went to a custom-fitted one online (I think mine was $120 from Sporting Smiles) and the difference is absolutely insane. I don't think I can ever go back to a boil-and-bite one unless it's an emergency situation like I'm traveling and forget my custom one.

Did it help? I feel like everytime I go to the dentist they are hawking a new brand of toothbrush to get me to buy.

I grind my teeth and was told to get a guard and tried these cheap OTC ones first. They are too thick and uncomfortable for me resulting in a lot of jaw pain. I forked over $300 for a professionally fitted one from my dentist and it's substantially thinner, stronger, and obviously fits better. Considering I've spent over $20k in dental work in the last 6-7 years mainly due to grinding, it's worth it.

I have tried these types of solutions in the past but found the I couldn't really get a good fit and they were uncomfortable to sleep with. Last year I have a guard made by my dentist and it was a night and day difference. I wear it without issue every night. If you have dental insurance (we have Delta Dental) the out of pocket cost was $50 in my case so it may be worthwile to look into!

These are not worth the savings over a custom fit guard. I went through 2 different heat and shape guards (including this exact one) to address nighttime grinding. I would notice in the mornings that my teeth felt funny, like they were being shifted by the guards at night.

I eventually decided to splurge for a custom fit appliance from sportingsmiles, and the difference was incredibly notable. It took 2 different impressions before I got a usable one, but it fit perfectly. No weird feelings in the morning at all. And additionally, because it was custom fit for my mouth, it wasn't oversized like the generic heat and shape ones end up being - so they can fit more mouth sizes.
If you look around online, you can likely find a deal for sportingsmiles or I'm sure there are other good alternative companies. But it was only $80 for the guard I got, and it was so worth it, imo.

dentist is custom fit and way way more comfortable and durable. I lost mine unfortunately and am using over the counter ones like these until I replace it. world of difference.

How are the "custom fit" online ones are different from "boil and bite" other than taking user error out of the equation? I have used $600 guards from my dentist and $5 amazon ones. They are exactly the same unless you are unable to follow directions.

The boil and bite ones are way thicker and take up a ton more room in my mouth. They're uncomfortable and it's obvious that it's just a $20 mouth guard (or $5). The online ones send you equipment for you to get a precise mold of your teeth, and then recreate it like a normal dentist would.

To me there is a massive difference. Im kind of wondering how bad your dentist mouth guards are if you can't tell them apart?

You're probably right but my dentist quoted me over $500 for a professional fit guard and it would not cover by insurance. Tough to swallow.

I did try a dentek one a year ago. Kind of worked I guess but it does come out kind of thick and bulky for something that has to stay in your mouth overnight. Definitely thicker and chunkier than like an Invisalign retainer
