$499--> $629???!? a 3G radio DOES NOT cost an extra $130. Is there anything else that is different besides the 3G radio?
Quote from metaldood :
1. Flash. The Safari browser included on the iPad doesn't have Flash -- just like the iPhone. That's a huge hindrance. How does Apple think it can get away with no Flash? Did it bake HTML5 in and forget to tell us about it?

2. No camera. A user-facing camera to enable video conferencing and/or video chats was high on the list of features expected. It doesn't have one.

3. No multitasking. It appears that even though Apple has re-jiggered iPhone OS to work on this device, it still can't run background processes. That's a huge detractor.

4. No Verizon. The 3G wireless service that comes as an option with the iPad is not being provided by Verizon Wireless. It is being provided by AT&T. Man, can AT&T handle it? We know the scorecard there.

5. No widescreen display. The 9.7-inch IPS display may be capable of showing HD movies, but it doesn't match the 16:9 standard screen dimension that many of today's devices conform to.

6. No Mac OS. The iPad runs a new, in-house built processor that Apple calls the A4. It clocks in at 1GHz. That appears to be just fine for iPhone OS, but the iPad doesn't run the more capable, full OS X, which is what would have really set the device on fire.

7. No GPS. The iPad has an accelerometer for a great gaming experience, but no GPS. That means Google Maps is going to have to rely on 3G and/or Wi-Fi to locate the iPad. So much for replacing your smartphone.

8. Enough storage. I realize that the iPad can sync content with iTunes and users can add/remove content at will, but 64GB (max size) is just not enough. Not enough for the games, movies and music I'd want to carry around.

9. Removable Battery. The iPad follows the footsteps of Apple's iPhone and newer laptops in that it doesn't have a user-removable battery. So much for bringing a spare for flights that last more than the 10-hour rated battery time.

10. No HDMI. How is it possible that Apple would skip an HDMI port for easy compatibility with today's HDTVs? Stunning, in my book.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I mean...no Flash would have been fine IF, and ONLY IF they showed that this had HTML5 capabilities. The fact that it does not.is an absolute fail..

No solid specs on the A4 CPU that powers it, I can't gather what architecture it is. But it doesn't seem to be x86, so running a real OS is out of the question. Also, no flash support is pathetic.

They could've done a slate for $800 running a real OS (10.6, modified UI for touch-oriented usage). Extra $300 could've put a CULV real CPU in there and a 9400M to handle HD video, along with HDMI out. Now that would've been a worthwhile product. Note-taking, book reading, and web browsing by day, HD Boxee device by night.

I'm curious on what kind of storage you need. I have a 32GB iPhone and I cannot fill that up, and I have plenty of apps, music, movies, TV shows and podcasts on that.

yeah I agree, i think when you think about standard data terms, 32gb isn't much, but with the apple video compression, you do get quite a bit. Though I could really see it starting at 32gb going to 128gb.

HD Movies. Along with the big screen of the ipad you will obviously want to store more videos and movies as compared to your small screen iphone!

And many are calling this to be the netbook "killer" (I don't feel that way) .... so you would want more storage with your documents and stuff also...

And also games! EA and other companies will definately want space for their games imo

Agree. See my post about HDMI -- can you imagine attaching it to a TV (with an adequate graphics chip)? That could replace most people's need for an HTPC, or, gasp, the Apple TV (or netflix box).

A USB port would allow all kinds of third party add-ons. One example is that new pen that creates images of your notes and records lectures.

A SD slot would allow it to replace a photo album to show on-the-go photos to family and friends. Imagine taking your camera and iPad to Grandma's house, and showing her the photos with no need to bring your laptop.

Maybe the next generation would allow these ports, (and multi-tasking, too).

Unlikely. Apple computers tend to have great resale value. Once the i5 or i7 MacBook Pros come out, I'll probably still be able to get 1200+ for my late '08 MBP.

I agree that it isn't a netbook killer. It is definitely a great replacement product for Kindle. That is what is drawing me to it. As I said earlier, I travel a lot and carry a Kindle, as well as PSP and obviously my iPhone (both for movies, iPhone for the iPod as well). I could replace the Kindle and PSP with this device and have a lot more "stuff to do"

Loaded up the video demo from HTML5Demo.com [html5demo.com] just fine on my iPhone. Since the iPad likely uses Mobile Safari, it should work just fine.

Its most likely an ARM-based processor.

No but it's irritating to have to move music around, it's much easier to have it all with you. I thought 2 gb was more than I could ever need when I bought my first gen nano, using that same justification. I'd never be in a situation when I'd need more than 2 gb of music at a time. But the minute I went over 2 gb, I was pissed, because for every new song I got I'd have to take an old one off. I said fark it and went and bought a 16 gb Touch. When that fills up I'll probably more up again.

And you really need to store all of that on this thing? It's not an ideal music player.
