one book is all anyone needs... THE BIBLE!
I guess the person who apparently thought I was defending the Kindle didn't bother to do a quick public domain search for the Kindle. In 2 seconds, I learned that you can upload 20,000 of the world's best classic titles, poems, philosophy on the Kindle for free. Walt Whitman, Tolstoy, Thomas Hobbes, Kant, Joseph Conrad. Good stuff for free.
And not everyone has time to go to the library to check out books, even assuming the library has them! Hell, maybe I'll get a Kindle now!
(joke)
Sticking with my iPod Touch and Macbook.
The Mad TV version of the iPad would have been more useful.

I will admit to a few things....The name is a bit ridiculous....Not having any USB or SD ports is a bummer. but this is What and How this device is used for.
Do we need it to run OSX? Photoshop? NO WE DONT we have a laptop and desktop for that
Do we need it to store 500gb of data? NO WE DONT we have are laptop, desktop and MP3 players
Do we need yet ANOTHER camera on a device? Jesus are cellphones, mp3 players, laptops, netbooks and are "Digital camera" have a camera!!! Why do we need ANOTHER device with a camera??? seriously?
Look how thin and light weight it is...Ok so we have a Desktop for are main room and duties, We have a laptop for on the go and a iphone or BB for quick checks of email and to listen to music.
For ME, When i lay in bed at night and just want to relax or lay on the couch, My laptop is rather uncomfortable or a bit OVERKILL and my Iphone is a bit to small for anything really serious, So i think this is the perfect device to have on your night stand. Grab it before you go to bed ( like a book but MUCH thinner and lighter ) and surf the net, read a book, watch some video or whatever....
The IBook store is a awesome idea!
I think people are taking this a bit to serious and expecting WAY to much from the device. It pretty much is a BIG Iphone, Which is a cool idea....Is the price a bit high? Well, We cannot say until we have are hands on it but keep in mind, This is Apple we are talking about here...So the price will be a bit high.
People complaining about cameras, HDMI ports, Doesn't run OSX, etc, etc....Once again, your not seeing the purpose of this device...Its not there to replace your Laptop or Desktop or a Netbook. "One thing i think i noticed that Steve J said it was better then a laptop" i am not sure if he said this or not, but that would be the WRONG thing to say" Though it MIGHT be better then a laptop depending on what your needs are.
As many stated, A larger Iphone with a bit more power is what it is and though the price is a little high for what it does, I think it actually could be a cool device.
Now if your looking for something to replace your lappy or desktop, then you'll be disappointed for sure.

It was essentially the same thing..it was a supersized Palm OS device to supplement your Treo..kind of like how this iPad supplements your iPhone.
It has USB, and an SD card slot built-in, as well as WiFi, bluetooth, and of course the general physical keyboard, and a 10inch screen.
Get this: It also supported a form of Flash (not Flash video unfortunately) and AJAX in it's browser.
It also had Instant ON, like the iPad.
It was essentially what a NetBook is today but with something like Chrome OS on it, and what the iPad is supposed to be like.
It's primary functions were for email, web browsing, and showing off Photos--> just like the iPad.
Jobs has said it was a new product category; so did Palm.
Price? $499 after $100 MIR
Gee..sounds familiar?
This was around the time of the original iPhone; the start of the touchscreen in the majority and the start of the netbook in the market. It was launched in 2007 so it's standards would probably be in-line with the iPad, if it were launched today.
What happened to it?
Palm killed it off after like 3 months of showing it off, because it just wasn't what consumers wanted. They said "I can get a laptop that does so much more for around the same price!"
And so that is how many people feel with the iPad as well today.
Unfortunately, it's the company that stands behind the product, that leads to it's success. People are going to buy this iPad just because it has the Apple moniker on it.
But what can you do huh?
btw ... HDMI out ... why? If I want to watch on my HDTV, I'll plug in a DVD or transfer the digital file over. I don't miss flash, but then I don't surf the web on my iTouch ... the screen is too small. I might be more inclined to watch movies on a bigger screen ... even if it had some silly name like 'iPad'. Hate the form factor of the iPhone, I prefer clamshell style.
If Apple put on a "real OS" and added all the missing pieces that everyone clamors for, wouldn't the price point be above macbooks/laptops? That's missing the point and their intended audience.

HDMI out for plenty of reasons. Software like Boxee can instantly turn your computer into a cable replacement and play back an extensive media library, local or otherwise. A lot of us have media that we'd like to display on our TV/media center, such as photos, movies, and music.
A real OS and capable hardware could've been done for under $750, easily. A CULV-class processor with a nVidia 9400M chipset (or, hell, even Intel video with HD decoding) and some DDR3 would've been enough to get a tablet-optimized build of 10.6 running on there. Then we'd have an actual useful device which would also be a fairly open platform as well, rather than locking us to the App Store and Apple's first party apps.
A tablet should be able to serve the functions of a notebook, but in a compact and touch-based form factor. As it is, we have a device which is a giant iPod with no multitasking support whatsoever. It's too big to be useful as an iPod, the screen isn't suitable for extended reading (so usage as a book replacement is out of the question), and the performance and OS aren't enough to be a real slate device. What we have is a jack of some trades (one at a time) and master of none whose functionality fits into some sort of no man's land.

... and I'm happy with the App Store.
I didn't purposefully try to be sarcastic there, but I'm interested enough in the device to defend it. All of these flaws were spouted by haters when the iPod Touch came out and although I was aware of these apparent shortcomings, I've been extremely pleased with the purchase and daily usage.

On every thread, you get somebody making the claim that people criticizing a product must not understand it or can't afford it. But that is simply not the case for most of the critics.
The criticisms here do understand the product, and there have many suggestions that would have made this thing a killer. But, as it is, it simply is not revolutionary. It is simply a larger format ipod touch.
With HDMI, folks on the fence about buying an HTPC or netflix box, could buy this device as a great addition to their TV system, and get a portable media player to boot. That would justify the price alone for me.
With an SD card, instead of whatever adapters you need to buy, you could view your photos taken on a vacation. Instead, you need to carry cables. OK, a small hassle but unnecessary one.
With USB ports, you could open up to a world of existing and to-be-created accessories.
With a webcam, you could use it for skype or other video conferences on the road.
With multitasking and flash, you could actually be productive with it.
With a closed OS that relies on iTunes and iPhoto to load content, instead of a file system, you could use it to carry and read your basic data.
While you dismiss all those things as being available in other products -- that in itself misses the point. The point of the iPad, it seems to me, is to have at least most of the above features with you at all times. If you need to carry a laptop on a short business trip because the iPad can't run a slide show, why get the iPad? If you need to bring another camera with you, why get the iPad?
Your example of a bedtime lap device is basically to use it simply as an internet tablet. But we already have lots of those devices, like Archos, Nokia, etc. We were told this was revolutionary. If Apple simply told people they were making a giant iPod touch, there wouldn't be as big a response.
