Fantastic idea. I always need to open my cases to find out which drive is inside. Bring back transparent plastic!

While having a clear case helps seeing what's the drive inside, wouldn't a metal case dissipates heat better?

I have 2 of these with Intel 730 ssds. And they look amazing with the Intel skull visible inside. And they work great but are limited to 5Gbps. So slightly slower than what sata can do at 6Gbps.

No, this isn't as good as it gets. Despite being a great deal, this is USB 3.0 and doesn't have USB C. A USB 3.1 gen 2 with USB is a better option for some.
USB 3.0 isn't going to appreciably hold back any SATA drive.

You can swap the cable, and it'll hook up to USB-C. No difference in transfer speed though Wink

They got plenty of cheap adapters to convert USB-A male to USB-C male if that's your thing!

I'm curious if there is a market for something like this since it will only offer marginal improvement over USB 3.1 Gen 1 for SATA drives

The enclosure scratches easily and my friend found the insertion/removal annoying.
Works fine for me though and I bought it for double the price.
Does the firmware pass along the drive model to the computer?

Most don't and you cannot therefore use the drive vendor supplied cloning software.

I left mine at work, but it showed up as "External Hard Drive" last time I checked.
The drive was dead and disconnected shortly after plugging it in, so I can test it with a working drive the next time I come in.
Edit: Crystaldiskmark is able to get the drive model and serial number so…maybe.

Missing capacitors!
I just got mine, and I see the 3 capacitors that can be seen on the product pictures are missing, there are clear marking on the PCB for the missing capacitors: EC1, EC2, EC3.
This might work without the capacitors, but I guess reliability and maybe performance might suffer.
I see customer pictures both with and without capacitors.
