Agreed, looks way too big.
Not endorsing this one in particular [amazon.com], but if someone wants something that's actually portable that serves the same purpose, I bought it two years ago for about $15. I've used it on several different style planes, and I think as long as the middle "ring" is oval instead of a circle, you can use the tray table lock to hold your phone under the in-flight-entertainment screen. This one [amazon.com] would probably also work based on the oval, if it helps explain it. (Again, not recommending or endorsing specific products.)
I glued ring to my case and worked good until I pulled it off and ring stayed or think expoxy will hold it
It also seemed like harder to charge it with ring on and using induction charging
