Pretty good. I prefer this over the XM5 because it folds up more compactly.

Sound quality is kinda meaningless when you run everything through AutoEQ

Same reason why I chose this over the XM5. Portability. I will wait for the refurb XM6s. I only use my XM4 when traveling.

Oh ok, my question was strictly out of sheer curiosity. I'm very aware of using open-back headphones, and I actually own 3x of them personally: 2x
Sennheiser HD 599 SE's and 1x Sennheiser HD 595.
58x and 600 are meant for home/desktop use and preferably with a headphone amp. The Sony is not meant for critical listening. Go with the Bowers & Wilkins PX series headphones if you want better sound. However, the NC is still better on the Sony.

Terrible, terrible choice for that purpose. I own these and the ANC is nice but sound is pretty odd, especially in the bass. You should be looking at open back anyways IMO, which on top of better sound will be way more comfy for longer listening sessions. 58x or 600 at Drop are good options at a similar or lower price if you want a simple recommendation.
Try the "bright" eq profile in the sony sound connect app. I found it to be a dramatic improvement vs the out of the box tuning.

Guess I'm waiting for the Bose QC's to go back on sale on Costco, hopefully they'll try to compete for prime day

also, the XM5 breaks with normal use. there's a whole Reddit group obsessed with this issue after they spent $300+ on XM5s only to have the hinges break with typical, light use.

As much as I like these XM4s, the problematic with the hinges sway me away.

All the XM have had issues with plastic hinges, but the XM4 are far more robust than the newer XM5 and XM6 model change.

Also, don't update the firmware because Sony ruins the ANC with 2.6 and later, though it is possible to downgrade with workaround tools.
