I would not be able to recommend something like this to anyone, as if I recall correctly the OBD2 port draws power through the ecm so any wonky voltage or short might damaged the ecm for the engine and that might be a bit more expensive than a battery. Do you have the solar panel connected to something that is regulating output voltage/amps to the obd2 port?

Just to note- if you prefer to use the cigarette lighter to connect, it will only charge the system if your cigarette lighter stays on after you turn the vehicle off. Also, 10w is the absolute minimum power I'd bank on for maintaining a trickle charge.

I have had this for 4 months or so, and it works great! Before I had frequent dead battery since I don't drive a lot. Now never a problem.

I mounted the solar panel into my sunroof under the glass, and routed the wires through the trim to the OBD port, which allows always on charging in my older car.

Going to be completely honest. I know nothing about this type of stuff and I've done 0 research yet its on my to do list but yay a deal posts before I can get around to it. So sorry for the stupid questions. Is there any reason this wouldn't work on a generator? is it possible to over charge the battery? I feel like I've seen some tenders have an auto function? Also any advice to a noob researching this stuff that is completely confused by electrical stuff lol.

I have this and it's worked well in my pickup that doesn't get driven much. My pickup has two cig lighter ports, one is always powered and the other is only powered when car is on. I have the solar panel on the dash and plugged into the always on port and I leave it plugged in even when driving. Haven't had to jump the battery since and that includes when the truck sat for a month unused in winter.

For those saying they use an OBD2 port pluggable solar charger, can you post it here? I've checked Amazon and could only find one and it's 10watt

Yup. Barely 500mA at peak performance is going to do very little (I can't believe they sell a 5 watt model). Most trickle chargers are 1-2 amps and even they can have difficulty with modern cars that don't actually turn off when you turn them off.
These really should be marketed as charge maintainers rather than trickle chargers, and even that will be a stretch under anything but perfect conditions. There is no situation where you will put this on a dead battery and come back, even a week later, to be able to start the car.
Yes but that counts for many of these chargers. The very best way to use them is to maintain. Do not use for charging a low battery.

I often have to jump the battery of my car during winter time when it gets to 0 degrees. This might help
It will as long as it's parked w a full battery and gets enough light. (Snow covered won't work obviously)

When I park the car for summer travel over the summer for 8 weeks I just disconnect the battery and also have a NOCO jumper just in case. Never had an issue since I learned I better disconnect the battery before though, otherwise likely dead, which cost me a battery the first time I did this.
All those pesky electronics that draw power when the car is parked. Seems to get worse over the years. Can also add a quick disconnect on the battery. Used to use this on my boat. Never an issue after parking it long term.

Sounds like you need a new battery, shouldn't be an issue if it's fully charged.I've started my V8 Tahoe, ATV, tractor, and my car below zero without needed to have a charger connected. Maybe check your alternator as well.
More like his car has parasitic drains that will lill it in a few weeks.

It's a charger if the battery is not hooked from anything and a maintainer if the battery is hooked up to a car. It's not their fault the car has a parasitic draw more than it's supposed to.Normal draw is between 50-100mA.People need to fix the issue, and this product will do just fine. I have a few of these and they work just fine.
Buuuut... Will it stop if connected to a battery only? I had a solar power pack and it charged until the lithium ion battery expanded. I can't believe it was still working, but totally not a great design. I've overcharged my motorcycle battery by hooking it up to a charger instead of a maintainer overnight.

Any idea if I could hook this up to a portable home backup generator I have connected to my house? It's just a DuroMax, but I would like to keep the battery maintained while it sits not in use.

So this thing is fine for a lawn tractor that usually doesn't have a problem starting even after sitting all winter but the owner has a slickdeals fueled consumerism problem?
That's highly contagious. It can even travel through Wi-Fi. As a guy who has had it for years I recommend you seek help now!

Since 2021 I have MPPT with EFTEF 55W 12V with max 18V 36 inch L x W 13 inch on my SUV dash titled up on my Solar channel just like my screen name here drop the Tech for Solar. But I call that my SSG. My AGM Batter is fully charge and no more asking the next door guy to bring his van to give me a boost. My battery is from 2021 still running today! I kind a joke around saying my SUV is Powered by the Sun when it's very sunny I have extra boost of juice to for the system does start off faster. Saving a lot of Fuel also. What is offer here can work but you won't get what I am getting though. Give it a try...

You mean like some special switch to connect once and then be able to simply turn on and off? I should look for something like that. Beats using the screwdriver after a late night flight to get the car moving again, haha.
