About this game:
  • You are the Luminary, the hunted hero who will protect the land from destruction in the latest RPG from the iconic DRAGON QUEST series. With a ragtag band of adventurers, you'll engage in well-balanced, turn-based battles and embark on quests across the kingdom of Erdrea. Forge gear, develop party members' skills, and alter their outfits without changing gear in this edition of the game! This version also lets you ride and attack with monsters on the field to earn experience points, as well as change between HD or 16-bit visuals, symphonic or synth music, and English or Japanese audio. Complete the tale with new character-focused stories, and travel to past DRAGON QUEST worlds!
  • Across the land, you'll meet the mysterious Tockles—creatures that allow you to visit 2D, 16-bit versions of areas from popular entries in the series like DRAGON QUEST IV and DRAGON QUEST VIII! It's fun to see these classic worlds reimagined in retro style, meshing perfectly with the main game's 2D mode. Like all past DRAGON QUEST games, this one's character designs are based on the signature style of famed artist Akira Toriyama. Paired with the voiced dialogue, the rich personalities of your most loyal companions and fiercest enemies are brought to life, so you can fully immerse yourself in this quest to discover the Luminary's true heritage and awaken your power. For a greater challenge, start the game with the Draconian Quest setting, and capture your favorite moments with Photo Mode!

Yeah, it is the lowest ever for digital. Nintendo published the physical version here in the US (out of print for a long time now) but I'm not sure about digital....... I think they might have previously and it has subsequently been transferred to Square Enix (similar to Octopath Traveler) and so that might account for the new historical low here.

Hopefully it'll get a Switch 2 upgrade path. Would love to play it in 4K/60fps

Nintendo did actually publish the digital version too. It was pulled from the eshop a few months ago and put back up as Square as the publisher. This is the price it goes from time to time on Steam as Square publishing, so it'll probably reach this price again, but still great

Switch, unless price is better or physical media is a major factor for you.

DQ XI S was basically developed for the Switch and ported to other consoles. It adds a lot of QOL features and extra content but the graphics are built for the Switch's lower capabilities. That means the PS4 version of S will look worse than the original DQ XI release on PS4 (but no worse than S on the Switch).

How does this bring you back to old school graphics? It looks like a hybrid of old and new graphics. Can't wait to play it! I LOVED the first Dragon Warrior game for the NES, I got it for free with a subscription to Nintendo Power! THanks for posting!

There won't be a Switch 2 version, because there isn't even a PS5 version. It was patched to run at 60fps on PS5, but it's playing the PS4 version. It's also 1080p. The Switch 2 also can't do 4K 60fps, because even the significantly more powerful PS5 Pro rarely does native 4K 60fps. It will be able to do upscaled 4K 60fps, like the PS5/PS5 Pro. Even the base PS5 is more powerful than the Switch 2. Nintendo fans are about to learn what Sony and Microsoft fans learned years ago: The companies over promise, every. single. time. Sony and Microsoft said we'd be playing games in 4K at 120fps. The very few games that actually do hit 120fps are 720p-1080p. Most of the time they don't even stay at 120.

One of the greatest RPGs of all time. Over 100hrs of gameplay which is exceedingly rare these days. My kids and I played it a few times each. If you like RPGs this one is fun for all ages.

Of course it's upscaled 4K/60. Why would a $500 console be capable of native 4K?

Get the S version for PS4. As a general rule of thumb, don't buy third party games on Nintendo platforms unless you really want to play them on the go.

While the S upgrade was initially limited to switch, it got ported to all other platforms so this is the least ideal way to play it now, especially for a game you're going to be looking at for over 100 hours. (e.g. Persona 5 Royal) It's even cheaper digitally on PS.

Why are you saying you want to be able to play this in 4K 60fps on Switch 2? Upscaled 4K is not true 4K.
