If you don't take Samsung's word on their Renewed Phones web site that they put in a new battery, there's a free app called Accu-Battery that will monitor several charges to 100% and compares the charged amount against the battery's rated capacity. If it's 100% of rated capacity, it's (functionally) new.

Buying used from the internet vs renewed from Samsung is very different. Renewed is like a new phone, 100% new battery, new IMEI, full Samsung 1-year warranty and eligible for their paid extension. So not even close to a regular "mint" on on the used market.

S21/22/23 will only get you 4 years worth of updates, the S24 will get you 7 years of updates. The S22 is widely regarded as the worst pick due to reduced battery capacity etc. Better pick S23 or S24 if possible.
Otherwise consider the S24 FE which can be found on sale with some pre-paid carriers at times.

Thanks. I'm thinking about buying a renewed 128GB S22 for $149 after trading in a mint Moto G Pure. I had an S22 prior to buying my current S24 from Fi for $300. Sold my S22 for $300. I want to buy a renewed S22 as a backup phone. I like its size.
Where do you sell it?

Samsung charging sales tax on the before trade in value kills it.

I sold my 256GB S22 in March 2024 to BuyBackBoss.com which is a reseller.

I bought two S21 phones the last time it was on sale for $99 and they looked brand new. It took 2 weeks for Samsung to acknowledge my trade in and another 4 months to finish processing them. Thankfully no issues in the trade in process and the S21 themselves.

That must be location/state dependent. I live in Kansas and it shows they only charge sales tax (9.35%) on the after-trade-in value. See attachment.

California really is corrupt. Unfair how the state charges more taxes.

price is not bad but definitely not a super slick deal.
most prices cannot even beat swappa direct buy price, why both with the trade hassle?
most of the prices need to go down another $100 to be luke warm.

That was why I later got buyer's remorse and ended up returning the S21 last year especially with updates ending in January 2026.

Questions for those who had bought a renewed phone before from Samsung, how was the condition of the phone? any blemishes? new battery?
Fantastic. like new:
https://www.samsung.com/us/busine...-re-newed/

The condition of the devices is 100% perfect.

The only downside is that even if you do everything correctly there is a 10-20% chance you run into issues with their assurant trade-in partner and the customer service. You need to absolutely document the top shape of your trade-in device via video and make sure to document charging working as well.

If you run into issues, you will likely be able to fix it then. The key is that they take forever to approve, you need to wait 42 days before they will even look at it, and the best strategy is to right after the 42 day deadline to chat with CSR and ask them for "manual approval" before 2-3 weeks later they come up with some phony issues. So far it all worked out for me, but out of 10 trade-ins they wanted to charge me twice and I had to intervene. All worked out in the end but annoying, and I traded in "mint" devices that were absolutely working fine.

They will just make stuff up, from not charging to empty box to broken device to whatever. Many credible posts from other users with similar negative experiences. Again, once you complain and have documentation you will likely be fine, but it's annoying when you know you wiped out the phone via USB cable and software. So, there is a chance this could happen, but if you want to keep the device I think it is worth it. Just document everything before sending in!

The Samsung renewed is like straight Apple refurbished. Top condition. You will get a wonderful device at half price. The S5 will get you $300 trade-in and can be found for about 40-50 online if you need a trade-in. You will not need to enter an IMEI during the purchase.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 series is currently slated to receive two more major Android updates: Android 15 (One UI 7.0) and Android 16 (One UI 8.0). The first update (Android 15/One UI 7.0) is already being rolled out. The second update (Android 16/One UI 8.0) is expected to be released sometime in December 2025/January 2026, according to SamMobile. Additionally, the S22 series will continue to receive security patches for an additional year, bringing the total to five years of security updates.
