Trickery and fraud? You're assuming people are taking advantage of Panera when in fact, Panera is getting exactly what they want in the deal too, whether it's a new customer or someone signing up with a new email address (not like it's hard for companies to detect this.) For the dirt low price of coffee or tea, they get you into their store where you're more likely to spend $11 on a half sandwich.

The house always wins.

If you have a Gmail address, you can add a "." anywhere within the address or a "+" followed by anything at the end of your base address and that will also go to your inbox. Gmail views it as the same address, but most vendors recognize it as a different address / account. For instance, if your email is JohnDoe@Gmail, then Jo.hnDoe@Gmail or JohnDoe+1@Gmail or JohnDoe+Panera@Gmail would be separate variants of your address that would also go to your Gmail inbox. It's kind of like the virtual credit card thing … Gmail essentially gives you an unlimited number of "virtual" email addresses with every account.

How are you guys getting this for free? The only option I am seeing is a promo for $5.99/month for 3 months.

It seems like a good deal for those not already subscribed; especially during summer travelling. A nice lemonade from Panera while travelling the highways seems like a great offer.

Once every two hours? I thought they cut it down to once a day?! That's crazy.
Always been every 2 hours. My wife and I both use it.

Isn't this technically trickery and fraud? I always try and do the right thing. If they have wronged me, I can always leave. Just saying and I'm sure many people won't like this but its the truth whether you like it or not.

Edit: as I predicted many people dislike this but not one person gave an argument. The reason is that it is impossible to make any argument justifying this and it is cheating. You do not have to go here they do not owe you anything so that you cheat them or anyone else. This is a fact and you are delusional if you think otherwise.
I agree with you, you can get your membership back for about $6 month right now you don't need to bite the hand that feeds you. If you can't handle that for a month of free drinks consider getting a subsidized bus pass and heading down to the food bank.

I wonder if they're making or losing money with this
They are making money off of this. I signed up last time and then tried to cancel but missed a screen in the cancellation process (you have to go through multiple "are you sure?" screens) so I was charged $15 after my free two-month membership.

Why are they doing a monthly reoccurring subscription? Is their goal to get millions of people paying month after month for a membership they may never even use?

That is the ENTIRE reason for reoccurring memberships. They depend on most people paying and never using it.

Will they give a refund to any of the millions of people who will sign up and not use it for a month, or 2 months or 10 months?

Probably not.

Know this, reoccurring memberships DEPEND on the company charging people for something most never use and never get value from.

It is the ultimate form of business trickery.

Lol, you say I'm assuming then you make an entire statement of nothing but assumptions. I am not assuming, it clearly states for first-time customers only so it's not an assumption. While here you are assuming that "yeah they do have first-time clients but it's all a trick to get everyone to sign up" Why would you assume this? If they just wanted people to sign up, they can have soooo many more people signing up by lifting the first-time rule. How many people are interested in panera's drink membership who are first time customers? You can use this forum just to see that the majority of comments are regarding people who are trying to trick the system and not new customers. Now regarding companies not detecting this it is harder than you think. They would have to block emails. Or + which is risky as too many false positives will trigger.
The way I see it: It's on them. There are ways to verify a a person, even if they try signing up with new accounts (like a phone number for instance). Also, your sample of how many people are interested as first-time sign-ups are skewed. This is a special interest forum dedicated to saving as much money on consumer goods as possible. I wouldn't be surprised if the people "gaming" the system make up less than 1% of these sign-ups.

If they wanted to close the loophole, they would. (and they absolutely CAN). Is this immoral? One could definitely argue that. Is nearly every single decision and action that a corporation makes/takes immoral? Yeah, I think so. So I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Corporations are not your friend and you don't owe them anything either. Their entire purpose is to make as much money as possible while standing on as many backs as possible.

While I am a fan of the Gmail trick, for some reason, I had trouble with Sams Club and adding a "+" ("+sams").

I recall seeing some people in the Sam's threads say their system seems to be more strict and might even use the address to detect previous users lately. I haven't followed that in a while though … probably something to mention in one of those threads if looking for more specifics.
